Today's aerial view of the Tour Ronde rock avalanche deposit that occurred last sunday! 😲 An allegory of a north face of a 3,800 m peak in the 21st century... not a single ounce of ice left! 🔥🧊 📷 Gilles Léger 🙏
A rock avalanche of impressive magnitude took place yesterday (July 19) on the north face of Tour Ronde (3,793 m asl) ! 🔥 A summit where this kind of events became recurrent in recent years with warming permafrost... 📽️ Maxim Foygel
View across Tour Glacier towered by Le Chardonnet (3,824 m asl) from above the Albert 1er hut today! 🧊🔥 Proglacial lake in formation (right)! 🌊 📷 @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social
5:00 am, the 'White Hour' over Mont Blanc few days ago! 🧊🤍
This what La Niche des Drus looks like amid this scorching summer! Vanished...🔥 This 200 m-high (usually) snow/ice steep ramp enclosed in the NW face of Les Drus, has seen two ski descents in history ⛷️ Seeing it like this, you wonder how it was even possible! 📷 @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social
Wandering above that mighty ice stream under the watchful gaze of one of the most beautiful mountains in the Alps! 🧊🏔️ All of this amid incredibly dry conditions! 🔥 Snowline on Argentière Glacier is already at the elevation of 'end of summer' in a 'normal' year... 😲
One of the many rockfalls (the largest) observed last sunday in the Argentière Glacier basin! 🧊🔥 Here in Les Droites (4,000 m asl) north face! 🏔

Bossons Glacier 2010 | 2026 Anthropogenic warming in action! 🧊🔥 When your kids ask you what a glacier was like... you'll still have the photos! 😢
Bossons Glacier this evening! 🧊🔥 Tmax in Chamonix (1,100 m asl) was 33°C today (at 6:00 pm, one hour before this picture was taken...)! Writing these numbers feels so surreal... 😱 We are CONSUMING the agony of a world that no longer exists.
View across Tour Glacier towards Aiguille Verte and Mont Blanc today! 😍 Very little snow for early June... 🥵 📷 @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social
Glacier des Bossons towered by 4,000ers (Mont Blanc du Tacul, 4,248 m and Mont Maudit, 4465 m) as seen from La Jonction today! 🏔️🧊🥰 Most icy landscape of the rest of your life... 🔥 📷 by @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social 🙏
Young Pinus cembra recently damaged by an avalanche against the backdrop of a glacier entirely damaged by human activity! 🧊🔥 Bossons Glacier today 🤍 📷 by @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social 🙏
Large subfossil log sampled in the Trient Glacier lateral moraine last year and just tree ring dated to the 1285/86 CE winter! 🧊🌲💍 Means that the Medieval early-LIA advance has reached the level of late-LIA (eg 19th c.) as we already show elsewhere in the Alps (journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....)
Melting glaciers today in Chamonix! 🧊💧💦 We just out fom the longest May period with average temperature >2°C (5 days) at Aiguille du Midi (3842 m asl), a threshold for cryospheric change at high elevation glaciers! 🏔️🔥 Picture: @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social Data: Xavier Cailhol
The year before the hole appeared in Bossons (here 10th Sept 2022), it still retained its incredible and endless tongue spreading across the valley! 😍 A vision that gave me goosebumps every time! 🤍 Now lost forever. We are losing beauty, in addition to our ability to live on this planet
Argentière serac ice cliff gazes huge recent ice loss! 🧊🔥 Thinking that back in 2009, both parts of the glacier were still connected! Now the serac no longer feeds the lower body, which sags at an incredible speed! A monumental natural amphitheatre, soon entirely de-icing because of us 🤮
Fieldwork in Argentière gorge is always stressful 😬 So many things can turn bad... -Rockfalls -precariously crossing streams tens times/day -AND sudden releases of water (Emosson SA) that can make the torrent impassable (don't be on the wrong side :) A bit of mental strain, but LOVE this place 🤍
Y'all notice that gaping hole first appeared in Bossons icefall in late summer 2023! 🧊🔥 Only the right branch (which won't last summer) still connects with the dead and flat lower body 🌡️ At most, it is still feeding by some seracs fall, but for how long? ⏳ @lomdumtblanc.bsky.social yesterday 🙏
