This is singlehandedly one of the strangest stories I've ever worked on for @londonermag.bsky.social It took months of investigating to uncover, and is a saga of luxury dog groomers, mummified cats and a mysterious Essex builder who ended up secretly running east London's hottest lesbian bar.

• And as public transport is both inferior and looked down on, people who really shouldn't be driving a car still have to • Delivery riders aren't helping much by riding hacked electric bikes across pedestrian precincts at high speed with an eye on two phones. To the locals, it's all the same /end

• The standard of driving has definitely worsened – distraction is largely to blame • Outer boroughs are more car-dependent, and the drivers are faster, more aggressive and less used to cyclists • Drugs are common, whether it's weed from a builder's van window or balloons in a dodgy Audi /2

Some context (yes, I know it's anecdata) but I've been cycling around London since the '80s so not a total numpty. I've recently moved from inner to outer London, and am struck by a few things. Hopefully not literally /1

Fairly obviously, safe cycle routes will need to include floating bus stops some of the time! Or they won't be safe. bsky.app/profile/lond... is the piece. HT @londonermag.bsky.social for a well-researched corrective to current tabloid panic over floating bus stops, cyclists causing danger etc.

What is killing & injuring people cycling in London? What has changed over the last few decades? Excellent @londonermag.bsky.social deep dive. To summarise: 1. LCC's Direct Vision lorry campaigning leading to Mayor @london.gov.uk action has cut fatal collisions. 2. TfL delivering more Cycleways...

Gosh yes - cycling in north London after getting used to central being so pleasant was terrifying and a lesson in how lopsided the infrastructure changes have been I suppose It's understandable that central came first but the demand is clearly there, everywhere else deserves improvements!

Teacher Vladimir Bimstone, was killed in November 1989 while cycling on Fulham Broadway. It was the tail end of an annus horribilis, which saw bike deaths in London peak. 37 years later, cycling fatalities have plummeted but serious injuries are up by 21% in one year. Why?

Excl: More people are commuting into central London via bike. But cycling infrastructure hasn’t caught up with them. Serious injuries have sky-rocketed by 21% in just one year. What's going on? We thought e-bikes would be to blame. We were wrong... It's a story about commuting.

Evan Davies on PM mentions an emerging “struggle between a radical Burnham and a realist Burnham”. It sounds like he’s marketing our @londonermag.bsky.social event, on precisely this theme. Which Burnham are we getting? www.tickettailor.com/events/millm...

Andy Burnham's first month as prime minister has gone swimmingly. But tough decisions are about to start. Perfect timing them for our must-attend event on 9 September. We'll be asking who the *real* Andy Burnham is, answered by the people who've covered him most closely.

More staggering data from this story that 7 out 10 victims in unsolved murders are black. Shootings are very overrepresented in the capital's unsolved murders - and 84% of victims in unsolved shootings are black. The Met say shootings are challenging to investigate.

Black Londoners make up just 13.5% of the population, but 73.4% of unsolved Met murder cases. Their cases are almost twice as likely to go unsolved by the Met as their white counterparts. What's going on?

A month into his premiership, questions around Andy Burnham are only getting louder. What does he actually believe in? How does he lead when the spotlight is on Westminster? And what does a No 10 with a northern outpost really mean for the rest of the country? We’re hosting an event to find out.

It's the summer London turned yellow. Our grasslands are desert and the colour of a box blonde dye job without toner. But how are the people charged with keeping the capital's gardens alive coping? We head to Holland Park, Kew and Dalston to find out. Scroll for link 👇

Have you heard about the turf war 50m below the Thames? Since 2022l, e-bikes have been clogging up the Greenwich foot tunnel, as footage from Reddit user FreazyWarr shows. Why? E-bike companies blame the council, the council blames the e-bikes. So we went into the war zone.
