Usually a little chaotic in here. I write about comics, film, books, music, Philly sports, and whatever stray signal drifts in. Strong opinions, low contempt. Pull the thread and follow it.

This looks pretty sick! Z2 Comics is putting out Milo Goes to Comics, a graphic novel recounting the story of punk legends Descendents/ALL, from their beginnings in the '70s to today. Written by Milo Aukerman and Bill Stevenson, with art by Ryan Dunlavey. Music history in comic form? Hell yeah!

Fort Psycho Vol. 1 has a great premise, but the story feels thin. The conspiracy piles up questions, and the island’s best worldbuilding is in the backmatter. I love a slow burn, but I need a spark. Anyone else reading? Thoughts? ARC provided through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Two books I’ve had on my radar for a while, and somehow I’ve never read either. Friday and The Private Eye. Going into both relatively blind, which is usually how I prefer it. Who’s read them? I want to hear what you thought. Just keep the bodies buried until I’m done.

Two formerly conjoined brothers running rival soda empires. Corporate espionage, murder, and a family feud so petty it’s almost impressive. @madcavestudios.com is refreshing. It’s awesome when a publisher is willing to embrace stories that are genuinely weird and let them be their own thing.

5 @DC NYCC reveals: 1. Hide Nor Hair — Hollywood noir, living masks. 2. Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light — Aaron’s Hal after 20 years in prison. 3. 100 Bullets: Enemigos — it’s back. 4. Joker/Harley: Malicious Intent — serial-killer mystery. 5. O.M.A.C. — Kirby weirdness, Denys Cowan. Yours?

Smile: For the Camera — 3.5/5 Even in death, they have to look beautiful. Miriana Puglia’s art nails the glamour of the modeling world. Even the horror looks gorgeous. The story is predictable and the curse’s payoff feels rushed, but it’s a stylish summer popcorn flick. I had fun with it.

If you’re like me, the TBR stack never really gets smaller. What’s got your attention this week? Major props to my LCS for ordering me a copy of Black Tower. I read it digitally and immediately realized I’d somehow slept on a book that is extremely my shit.

Happy 95th birthday to Dick Tracy. Still one of the coolest silhouettes in comics. Still punching weird-looking criminals in the face. Still somehow making a yellow trench coat look intimidating. 95 years is a hell of a run!

Stylized illustration of Dick Tracy in profile, wearing his signature yellow fedora and trench coat. His face is mostly in black silhouette, framed by a red circle against a dark blue and black background.

I spent years wanting Mahershala Ali’s Blade. Then that project fell apart, and he reunited with Bassam Tariq for a smaller, stranger, deeply personal original action movie. Honestly? The superhero movie disappeared. The personal movie survived. I’m extremely here for that.

What comic made you break your own “digital-first” rule? The older I get, the more I want comics worth owning. Not “variant cover because shiny.” Give me weird paper. Oversized art. Make the physical book part of the experience. Absolute Martian Manhunter is wrecking my digital-first philosophy

Cover of Absolute Martian Manhunter: The Agency featuring a retro motel sign, a hooded green figure with bright pink hands, and a suited man beside a black car and yellow suitcase.

I think of Norm Macdonald a little like Tom Waits. Their peers seemed to understand the depth before everyone else did. A musician’s musician. A comedian’s comedian. Both so singular that imitation only ever gets you the surface. Norm was operating on a different frequency.

Bluesky feels like an abandoned mall where every remaining store is somehow a networking event. There are active pockets, sure, but you walk past twelve shuttered storefronts to find them. Then someone hands you their newsletter.

Happy Comic Pull Day! What’s everyone blown away by this week?! Anyone read Murphy and Gough’s - The Last Driver? Circling it but want to hear more about it first.
