Glittering Sea, Hiroshi Yoshida circa 1920 The sun doesn't appear anywhere in this print, and yet the entire composition is somehow about the sun. The corridor of light it creates through the inland sea, and the two boats it's indirectly compelling across it.

Rain at Ushibori by Kawase Hasui, 1929. Rain over still water has a sui generis smell: old, metallic, alive. Hasui's visual interpretation in Ushibori has always stuck me with an incredible peacefulness.
