AI is kind of like a reverse Neon Genesis Evangelion in that older people are desperately thrusting themselves into machines that are destroying them, for no urgent reason, and younger people are yelling at them not to.

I don't think "finding common ground" with Republicans is a worthwhile enterprise but if you're going to try anyway, at least take a long look at how Tyler Cowen wrote tons of bad stuff about cops to a conservative audience for a long time.

If you are developing a New Admired Person, I think it helps to go ahead and assume they have had or will have one Pretty Bad But Not Irredeemable Plot Arc. It's healthy for expectations. Let a great researcher be kind of the bad guy in a small, silly very local politics squabble or whatever.

Sometimes I see people say "I don't even know that is and I don't want to understand it" when they do understand it and think it sucks, and it's frustrating and bewildering to me. Denouncing something is so much stronger than vaguely insinuating it's nonsense with a shrug and an "I dunno" thrown in

I loved playing it at launch but I mean, yeah, that Marathon player base doom loop kicked in a long time ago. Most can't just go pick the game back up after a while off at this point, I tried-forget muscle memory, I don't remember all 34 button locations for the back door into Pinwheel! Sorry!

A critical part of coming into a long-running tabletop RPG game with a new character is helping existing players understand your character, its probable dynamics within the group, and how much they're going to hate it.

The Vince McMahon falling out of a chair meme, inverted so he gets less excited as it goes down, with 8 descending stages.

Stage 1: The group has a cleric again, with plate armor.
Stage 2: It's only level 2.
Stage 3: It was made for a one shot and not intended to survive.
Stage 4: It's played be (me)
Stage 5: It’s a birthday themed character.
Stage 6: Its name is Annual Smallcakes.
Stage 7: It has birthday themed sayings and accessories.
Stage 8: The DM already accidentally called it “cheeks” instead of cakes so get ready for big beautiful butt cheeks jokes so long as it lives.

I spend some of my time helping people eliminate malicious or annoying bots affecting their thing, and I don't even know the details of what Bluesky does with that, but the general public is just never going to understand the nuance therein and be graceful, while also needing this service badly.

Just remembered when I was like 12 I requested rare killifish from an email listserv called KillieTalk and the guy sent them to me in a full insulated package for free and I gave them to my brother as a birthday gift and my whole family was delighted. Need to re-find that internet.

What's the best joke you've told in person that nobody got? I still think about ten years ago when someone saw the word "expansive" on a presentation slide and asked "what does that even mean" and I said "it's when you're southern and something costs a lot" and everyone was totally confused.

I am all for your TNGs and DS9s and other full olde school 20+ episode season era of TV series dropping in goofy novelty concept episodes. But Strange New Worlds is ten episode seasons. So season 4 is basically Jurassic Park, film noir, puppets, soap opera, and a little bit of Star Trek.

Most fantasy: Ah, I dare not move on my nemesis now. Perhaps a plan lasting an age of man or three, I shall put in the works... Malazan Book of the Fallen: While the assassin had only met the wizard an hour ago, he was kind of annoying, and so the assassin had resolved to kill him before nightfall.

A thing that has changed my gadget outlook a lot is buying a fridge last year and learning the newfangled disaster that ruined modern fridges is...the ubiquitous icemakers and common in-door ice and water modules! They break! The IOT and screen stuff you can simply not buy, it's fine.

After all of this Trump stuff is done I would also like to talk about the large number of older guys in the corporate managerial ranks that have this same type of creepy shit going on where it's easiest to go through their favorite weird captive / captor to access them

“A well-timed text to Harp can unlock access to Trump, giving well-known lobbyists and fringe figures alike an audience with the most powerful man in the world.” Great arrangement for US national security. Just great. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

Bluesky Reacher fandom is essentially a years-later replay of the initial John Fetterman fandom. "Oh, usually big tough guys are not the kind of guys I find likable but this one seems vaguely good!" So I guess in season 6 he's going to join Mossad or something?

Cryo Archive: Amerifat air conditioning Remilitarized Zone, you can't even smoke in there, inverse but worse bankers hours ass schedule. Perimiter: 1970's coded highway rest stop, a vibe, open 247365

I think I successfully sustain following people with diverse enough views and opinions that they're regularly in conflict, and the key to this not bothering me at all is simple: I don't believe I would necessarily like and commune with these people if I knew them in real life, and that's fine.
