Wouldn't it be nice if El Capitan had a system-wide dark mode? Only the "About this Mac" window is photoshopped, everything else in the screenshot already exists.
Just picked up a Highpoint RocketRAID 2720GDL for $28 shipped! What's this? Converts internal drive bays on cMP from SATA II, to SAS + SATA 6 Gb/s! Even on a 1,1, PCIe v1.1 x8 = up to 2GB/s, so this will be a massive speed bump for boot drives.

Hey everyone, thank you for your patience! Low End Mac is back up and running for visitors. Some tweaks will be made soon, but the theme-related server migration hiccups are over with. 😊
Hey everyone! It looks like Low End Mac has switched over to the new servers and there are some bugs still to be ironed out. The main page appears to have broken links. In the meantime, use the "Article Index by year" view to find what you need! 🙂 lowendmac.com/article-index/

Update 7: Installing Windows 10 to a physical 3 TB HDD while booted in El Capitan via VirtualBox. Once I get Windows + boot camp drivers going, then the Oculus Rift! P.S. not using windows via Virtualbox, only as a vehicle for OS installation. Instructions will be included in an article later on.
Update 6: Don't mind the messy desk as there's lots still going on, but it's alive!! And in 4K 😉
Update 5: After a few detours in terminal for the firmware upgrade, the CPUs now work! Here are the upgrades completed so far: 64 GB RAM ✅ GeForce GTX 980 4 GB ✅ Install FB-DIMM RAM heatsinks ✅ Firmware upgrade 1,1 --> 2,1 ✅ Broadcom BCM94360CD ✅ macOS El Capitan 10.11.6 ✅ New thermal paste ✅
The GTX 980 is in, and it works! The last 2x 8GB sticks came in as well so I'll be doing the heatsinks on those as well, to complete the 64 GB of RAM. Still waiting for: The Xeon upgrades, PCIe boot SSD, and a couple other things.
Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the old and new Bluetooth + Wi-Fi cards. With this drop-in upgrade the Mac Pro 1,1 —> 2,1 will gain 802.11ac Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 4.0, AirDrop, HandOff, lower latency, and better compatibility with Apple Magic Gen 2 peripherals.
This has to be the cleanest and nicest 1,1 I’ve ever seen, and now it’s all mine! Time to turn it into a 2,1 and resurrect my Mac Pro from 10 years ago, but slightly better. Stay tuned! 😁
Just got this in! For $35, a 2010 13” MacBook Pro in it’s original config with a charger, and a speck case! It has a single dent but is otherwise in remarkably good shape.
