One weird little result of the Great Depression in Britain was a glut of pianos. Hire purchase had put them within reach of working-class households, but unemployment left many unable to keep up payments, flooding the second-hand market and causing the value of pianos to collapse.

Orwell’s Road to Wigan Pier is excellent understanding the unequal impacts of the Great Depression on working-class folks. Also recommend English Journey by J. B. Priestley as an excellent paired text.
