🎓Sir Hamid Patel (leading school leader) puts it well in TES - doing nothing for the thousands of young people being branded a failure by our education system is not an option. I agree we can both celebrate the strides that we have made while at the same time recognise we have failed too many.
Technical routes could tackle an inherent tension in education
Our education system works well for many pupils, but it also leaves many behind, which is why giving vocational routes more prominence has merit, says Sir Hamid Patel

Education should be a passport - to work, to life, to further study. But too many young people are still being shut out. Everyone deserves an education that matches their high ambitions, not a one‑size‑fits‑all straitjacket. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...
We must end this one-size-fits-all approach to education
Our school system has become too single-minded and is stopping children reaching their potential, says the education secretary

High standards and a broad education are not a trade-off. Excellent pathways for everyone is what I want. Two weeks in, here's where I'm starting. Great speaking to @pippacrerar.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
‘Tiger mum’ Lucy Powell on Labour’s vocational skills drive: ‘It’s about ambition for everybody’
Lucy Powell says it is ‘false trade-off’ by critics to suggest schools in England can’t pursue academic excellence alongside technical skills

Huge congratulations to @bevcraig.bsky.social our fantastic new Mayor of Greater Manchester. Thank you to our tireless activists who have worked so hard to help deliver this win.
Communities know their local economy best. By putting more decision-making power into the hands of mayors and local leaders, we're helping ensure training and education reflect the jobs and opportunities in every postcode. /1
Out with @bevcraig.bsky.social and our brilliant members in Stockport this morning. Polling Stations are open until 10pm. If you haven’t returned your postal vote, you can take it to your polling station today. Vote Bev. Vote Labour. For our future. (don't forget your ID)
No young person should be left behind by our education system. Great to sit down with @mattchorley.bsky.social for a wide-ranging conversation about why technical and vocational education matters alongside academic routes. Interview in full ⬇️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXgd...

We must recognise that an over‑focus on academic outcomes has left too many young people behind. The revolution happening in post‑16 technical and vocational education will soon be matched for 14 to 16‑year‑olds. I look forward to making it happen. www.gov.uk/government/n...

Great to sit alongside the new Prime Minister yesterday at his first Cabinet.
Every child, wherever they live, should grow up with opportunity on their doorstep. It was a privilege to walk through the door as Education Secretary to start that work.
Absolutely thrilled to be appointed Education Secretary. For me there’s no more important job for any government than making sure young people have the best education, the best opportunities and the best future they can. Lots to do and I look forward to getting started.
Water is an everyday essential and privatisation hasn’t worked: bill payers and tax payers are the back stop for failure whilst all the rewards and profits go into private hands. Everyone knows it’s got to change. Speaking to @news.sky.com
As predicted on Trevor Phillips this morning I’ve had more messages about the parakeets and the garden than anything I said…
We won’t out Reform Reform, or out Green the Greens. We’ll be authentically Labour - taking the pressure of people’s lives and rewiring the country so it works for the many not the few. Speaking to Laura Kuenssberg this morning on the BBC.
Andy Burnham has a big bold vision of a country that works better for ordinary people, taking the pressure of family budgets, putting power and agency in the hands of communities. 👇🏻
On Friday we held a special conference to mark the election of Andy Burnham as Labour Leader - great to welcome so many friends and colleagues to Congress House as we start a new chapter for our Party.
Andy Burnham has a plan to rewire Britain so it works better for ordinary people with more power in the hands of local areas to shape their futures, and more public control over life’s essentials. My latest for @politics.mirror.co.uk www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...
'Why I'm backing Andy Burnham's different approach to politics'
'We need a Labour government of all the talents, representing our broad church movement, all parts of the UK and that looks like our diverse country', the Labour Deputy Leader Lucy Powell writes

Earlier today I paid tribute to Ann Widdecombe, called for more civility in political debate and for further action to tackle hate propagated online.
A really important visit to Bridge College last week. Bridge is a specialist higher education provision in East Manchester - it was good to listen to students about their first hand experiences and aspirations for the future, as well as a discussing the issues affecting specialist education.
Delighted to speak at Gurinder Singh Josan MP's fundraiser at West Bromwich Albion last Thursday to raise vital funds, thank members and councillors, with a special thanks to those who lost their seats in May.
Amazing visit on Friday to the new dedicated women's team facilities at @manchestercity1.bsky.social and meet legend Vivianne Miedema! Also very impressed with the new north stand facilities, new City hotel and Medlock Sq. Local jobs and local procurement are at the heart of these investments.
The sunshiiiine doesn’t stop us campaigning for the brilliant @bevcraig.bsky.social for Greater Manchester. Her pledge to extend free bus travel to 11-18 year olds is game-changing.

Shocked to hear the circumstances of Ann Widdecombe’s death. She was one of a kind - independent minded, fearless & driven by conviction. Even though we represent different politics, I always respected her & her approach. This is very disturbing news & we should come together across politics.
Today we welcomed @lucympowell.bsky.social and councillor Thomas Robinson at Bridge College for a joint meeting with the Policy and Campaigns team at Together Trust charity and @natspec.bsky.social!
Great to be at the Beacon Centre in Clayton today for the inaugural Pride in Place board meeting. What fantastic board members we have.
Reform’s attempt to distract from their own failings won’t wash. We can all see this for exactly what it is. If Farage was so confident he had abided by the rules and had legal advice to that effect, he would have ample opportunity to present his case. /1
