UPDATE: DHS said the man is Rafael Andres Rubio Bohorquez. DHS says he entered US on a tourist visa in 2017 and overstayed. Said he had an assault arrest; did not specify if he had been charged/convicted. Council says he had TPS that granted him work authorization until Oct. 2026.

NEW: A Venezuelan employee of the New York City Council was detained by Trump immigration officials during a routine appointment on Long Island. Julie Menin, the Council speaker, said the staffer was legally authorized to live and work in the US until October. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/12/n...

The Canal Street raid, which included more than 50 agents, was supposed to be even larger. Feds had amassed more than 100 agents for the raid, but it was scaled back at the last minute, after details leaked, per 3 people familiar. Raid was a harbinger of what's to come.
