With the new fiscal devo announcement today, here’s where we are compared to other countries Highly centralised in terms of tax take. Which means we invest less locally and have less local power. Which means we are more unequal and living standards suffer across the country

Luke Raikes@lukeraikes.bsky.social · last mo.

Why? Because we don’t let places pay their own way and have the Treasury micromanage everything. We are overwhelmingly the most fiscally centralised major economy - raising just 5 per cent of tax locally. The treasury hoards taxpayers money and leaves places without.

“Der König des Nordens” - wonder what that means… Spoke to @zeit.de about what lessons @andyburnham.bsky.social is drawing from Germany Including devolution and equivalent living conditions - “growth felt in every postcode” - which draws on the German Basic Law www.zeit.de/2026/31/andy...

Burnham is looking at reviving Help to Buy, according to the Sunday Times. Last week, we published how to do this. Our deposit loan scheme: 🏘️ Helps 136,000 households over 5 years own a home 💷 Cuts mortgage costs by £100s a month 🏡 Supports the building of 11,000 extra homes a year

I feel like I've been saying this for at least a decade. Most of what Britain needs for net zero, housing, productivity, public services, transport etc is physical stuff. We can either buy it or make it. It would probably be good for the economy if we managed to make at least some of it ourselves

Important article by @andrewlewinmp.bsky.social on how Labour can expand opportunity and help young families. Great to see Andrew talk about my idea for a baby & toddler top-up to Universal Credit to tackle high rates of early years poverty. labourlist.org/2026/07/the-...

Labour should redouble our efforts to put the issues affecting younger people and young adults at the centre of our politics.

Robust local checks and balances are crucial if we want mayors to take on more power - and have more freedom from Whitehall. This report from @cllrmarcus.bsky.social fleshes out a comprehensive and practical proposal.

"This is Andy’s bread and butter, he really understands it from the perspective of the mayoralties. And when he says that he’s going to do this, it’s not just a slogan that will need to be figured out later, it is something he will follow though on”

My take on today's speech - focused (naturally) on devolution and regions @labourlist.bsky.social This was a clear statement of intent - and should bring hope to people in all corners of the country. @andyburnham.bsky.social now needs to hit the ground running... labourlist.org/2026/06/doin...

Today, Andy Burnham set out an ambition and a plan. But that plan now needs to become a reality across Britain's places and for its people.

People are deeply sceptical things can get better or that new policies could change anything This is a problem for the gov A focus on policy + doing the right thing isn’t enough Read my @labourlist.bsky.social column on why policy without politics is impossible labourlist.org/2026/06/no-p...

Ben Cooper column: 'You can't have policy without politics' - LabourList

Policy cannot be divorced from politics. People want to know who Labour stands for, and is against. The government should tell them often.

Well there's clearly a lot of policy discussion going on (!) But amongst it all, I've set out why Labour must build a more visible and accountable state, for @labourlist.bsky.social And yes it was an excuse bang on about buses - but not for long, I promise! labourlist.org/2026/05/visi...

Behind the scenes the government is reforming the state so that where it treads, it does so confidently, visibly and accountably.

Millions of people will be voting Green or Reform today - often for the first time The declining rate of homeownership is reshaping our politics In response, Labour must show that homeownership is a realistic prospect as an antidote to 'broken Britain' labourlist.org/2026/05/ben-...

Ben Cooper column: 'Labour must help families build towards their dreams' - LabourList

Labour must give people real hope and develop policies that provide the security of homeownership for everyone.
