💙🦋 Butterflies in the Clouds! ☁️✨ I hit 1k!! I'm SO excited that I whipped up this bab to raffle off in celebration! I have a 2nd design that will go up when this raffle concludes as well 👀 To enter, just follow + like + repost! Winner will be drawn on the 22nd (This upcoming Friday!)

An anthropomorphic blue cat with blue and white cloud markings. They have a pair of butterfly-like wings that are made of clouds, as well as blue butterflies resting on their body.

I've been adding alt text to my finished art and work updates for a long while. These are some guidelines I've set for myself that may help others! Also I want to mention! Lexikitty has a cool video about blind people tech: youtu.be/hBoeoIqtI1I - mild volume warning for the first ~20 seconds

Image is a text-heavy graphic over a mint green backdrop. The text reads:

Alt Text Tips, part one of two. November 2024.
The following are things to focus on / include in alt text.

Include any text in the image. For example: "image text reads: (insert text)", or simply write out the image text.
Use effective descriptions to save text space while still conveying the tone. Examples: an excited anthropomorphic wolf, a solemn expanse of blue sky, a relaxed person seated next to a calm lake.

Describe the essentials. If the image is of a person / character, what are they doing (holding an object, sitting, etc?). what is their overall mood (lively, melancholic?). what are they wearing (a warm hoodie with stylish techwear accessories?). if the image is of a thing, place, or person,
what is the setting (a grassy plain with a far-off wall of mountains, the interior of a house, a yellow background?). what emotion does the setting convey (a whimsical field of flowers, a lonely cliff above a restless sea?). what colours are being used (a vibrant green jungle, a dusty beige stack of envelopes?).

Punctuation is Important. Be sure to spell check and properly punctuate your text. Screen readers will not insert forgotten periods, and may not interpret text emojis.

Know your character limits. Different sites have different character limits for alt text. Bluesky: 2000. Instagram: No Limit. Mastodon: 1500. Tumblr: 4096. Twitter: 1000. the following sites have no integrated alt text option at the time of this post: Artfol, Cara, DeviantART, FurAffinity, Inkblot, Pillowfort, Sheezy, Toyhouse.

if your alt text is heavy (such as this graphic) and exceeds the character limit, split your graphic into multiple images or link to an offsite post or document that includes the entire text.Image is a text-heavy graphic over a mint green backdrop. The text reads:

Alt Text Tips, part two of two. November 2024.

The following are things to avoid in alt text.

Emojis, URLs, Formatted Text, and Excessive Hashtags. Keep your text plain; screen readers cannot read fancy fonts. No emojis; screen readers read out each emoji individually. Keep links in the post body. If you must include a URL, keep it short and condensed. Keep hashtags to a minimum (2 -3), add them after the image description.

Improper Use of Alt Text. The purpose of the alt text is to describe the image. It should not be used exclusively for signing your name, website, hashtags, or text that is completely unrelated to the image itself.

The Hyper-Specifics. Not every detail needs to be included. Keep descriptions short and essential and use descriptive words to bolster it.

for example, this: “image is a digitally drawn art piece made in Photoshop in 2024 of a 5' 9” male grey wolf original character belonging to [insert person name]. He is making an angry conflicted expression at the viewer with scrunched eyebrows. He is wearing a black sweater with a slightly lighter grey neckline, with a hoodie on top that is black, purple, and blue. The sleeves are purple with blue cyber patterns running up the sides only and blocky geometric symbols on the outside. They also have patches of a galaxy patterned triangle, a planet with moons orbiting it, a comet, a smiling sun, a satellite, and a solar system.”

could be written instead as: “image is a digital drawing of a moody anthropomorphic wolf wearing a dark techwear-style hoodie over a black sweater. his hoodie’s sleeves feature bold futuristic blue and purple graphics and cosmic-themed patches.”

If you want to convey that the piece features a character belonging to someone else, such as a commission, you can write “image is a drawing of the client’s character” while keeping the client’s name / link in the post body.

PSA for newbies: Please include ALT text on your images. This is an inclusive space for blind and visually impaired people. Don't arrive late to the party and ignore a bunch of people. Also, please share this skeet, rather than liking it, to ensure the message gets delivered. Thanks!
