Last night I went to see a friend from high school in a play at Planet Ant Theatre's black box. Dawn and I were in drama club together. In my senior year, she played my mom in Brighton Beach Memoirs and Roxanne to my Cyrano. This was the first time we've seen each other in person in ~25 years!

Something I often see in Artistic Directors of theatre in the US is that they forget that technicians (and scenic build, load in, focus, quiet time) are a part of the artistic process. They view the work of carpenters and electricians as simply labor rather than an integral part of the whole.

After my parents were visiting set for the first time, I asked my dad what he thought. He said “I didnt realize, it’s like you’re building a house, and once an hour good looking people run in and put on a play for five minutes. Then they leave and you go back to construction.”

Several years ago, when I was still an artistic director, I had a presentation to our big regional funder which would determine the size of the theatre's grant for the next 3 year cycle. Core to our case was that we paid a living wage, and often paid artists more than theatres many times our size.

I am working very hard to get into the habit of reading a magazine as soon as it arrives and then recycling it, so that I don't end up trying to create shelf space for another 20 years worth of Rolling Stone.
