#WordsOnWednesday Today is Owain Glyndŵr Day, commemorating the last native Prince of Wales, and his historic rebellion against the English. The Cistercian monastery of Strata Florida Abbey was an important focus of religious power at the time, as well as a major intellectual and literary centre.
Tales from the Mabinogion

Stevan Anastasoff, former White Dwarf writer, and video game designer: Warhammer Online, For Honor, Assassin's Creed, and many more. Now working on Tales from the Mabinogion, a game about Welsh mythology using Welsh as its principal language.
A perfect view of Castle Arberth, standing strong above the Autumn forest... :) I know, I know, I've got a game to finish, I should be working instead of flying around taking random screenshots... But the game world is just too lovely not to share, even if I do say so myself!
Sometimes the camera just happens to fall on a perfect Autumn view... :) This scene is shortly after Pryderi arrives back in Dyfed after the brutal war in Ireland, taking stock in the peace and beauty of his lands. Little does he know that all is about to be lost to a devastating magical curse!
#MythologyMonday The sorceress Ceridwen was the keeper of the Cauldron of Awen, source of all knowledge and inspiration. Some scholars suggest her origins lie in an earlier pagan goddess of prophecy, although others attribute her perceived divine status to more modern neo-pagan practices.
Missed #screenshotsaturday yesterday, so here's a catch-up shot: a view over one of several beaches in the game inspired the Pembrokeshire coastline. The severed head of High King Bendigeidfran, on the far rocks, watches warily for invaders from over the sea.
#BookWormSat “So they took the blossoms of oak, and the blossoms of broom, and the blossoms of meadow-sweet, and produced from them a maiden, the fairest and most graceful that man ever saw. And they baptized her, and gave her the name of Blodeuwedd.” - From the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi
For fans of indie games this site just launched, a curated collection of actual human-selected recently-released and upcoming indie titles. And their initial choices actually look pretty well thought out, very positive first impression... :) player32.com/about/

#WordsOnWednesday In the Third Branch of the Mabinogi, a cursed fog settles across the land of Dyfed, leaving it barren of all life. If you've ever seen 'dragon's breath' cloud inversions settle over the Welsh valleys, it's easy to understand where the inspiration for this story may have come from!
This is not an actual in-game shot, it's just where the camera happened to fall in-editor while setting up a cinematic! But it made me smile... :)
#FairyTaleTuesday "I know why there is an echo in a hollow; Why silver gleams; why breath is black; why liver is bloody; Why a cow has horns; why a woman loves." 'The Book of Taliesin' is a 14th century vellum manuscript, preserving the much older poetry attributed to the great bard Taliesin. 1/3
#MythologyMonday In the Third Branch of the Mabinogi, Pryderi and Manawydan travel to England to take up various crafts, excelling in each. The English craftsmen are so threatened by the skill of the two friends that they chase them from town to town until they are forced to return to Dyfed.

#WyrdWednesday #InternationalDogDay All know of King Arthur and his knights, but lesser known is Arthur's faithful hound, Cafall. In the tale of Culhwch and Olwen, Cafall is brings down the Chief-Boar, Ysgithyrwyn. He later leads the hunting pack in pursuit of the monstrous Twrch Trwyth.

#MythologyMonday The chess-like game of 'Gwyddbwyll' appears multiple times in the stories of the Mabinogion, played by such notable figures as Peredur and even Arthur himself. 1/3
#ScreenShotSaturday Just completed the first full, complete walkthrough of the game!! A huge amount of debug, clean-up, polish, and balancing to do, but it's still a major milestone reached! Took me around two hours and twenty, so I reckon a normal play though will be a good three to four hours.
Get your tickets now! I'm not on the panel, but I did write a little something on the subject. You can read it here... :) www.historicalgames.net/making-tales...

#MythologyMonday Many say that the hill of Gorsedd Arberth, or the Throne of Arberth, is a portal to the Otherworld of Annwn! 1/4
#FolkloreSunday The Four Branches of the Mabinogi, central stories in the collection now known as the Mabinogion, largely focus on the fortunes and failures of several intertwined mythological Welsh families, mostly notably the House of Dôn and the House of Llyr. 1/4
#ScreenShotSaturday I've been playing around with different mountain shapes this week, but they're always ending up feeling too 'Alpine' and not Welsh enough. What is it that you find most characteristic of Welsh mountains in particular? What gets those feelings of Hiraeth stirring?
#BookWormSat It's International Cat Day today! Cath Palug was a beast of a feline that terrorised Ynys Môn (Anglesey) before being slain by the warriors of King Arthur (or Arthur himself in some versions of the tale). www.instagram.com/peter_diamon...

The more common 'pili-pala' is also lovely, and a super fun word to say! But my favourite Welsh butterfly term has got to be 'iâr fach yr haf', or 'little chicken of the Summer'... :D
There are many words in Welsh for butterfly. But my absolute favourite has to be: Glöyn Byw / Glöyn Fyw Literally translating to mean “living coal” or “living embers of lit coal”. It’s just so fitting and evocative. Fun to imagine butterflies as little fire sprites.
Mhara Starling`s videos are like beams of joy, and you should go follow her! Just saying... :)

Apparently Chris 'Flamebaster' Roberts is now doing a show in English! But... I'd still recommend instead watching his Welsh language show, 'Bwyd Epic Chris', with English subtitles - the sound of the language is too colourful to miss out on! www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/...

#WyrdWednesday The great bard Taliesin was born from a magical grain of corn, consumed by an enchanted chicken! According to the legend, a young boy, Gwion Bach, accidentally stole the power of poetic inspiration from the sorceress Cerridwen. 1/5
#fairytaletuesday I've shared many images of Blodeuwedd, the enchanted woman crafted from flowers, over the past couple years. This one, by Welsh artist Aled Thompson, is my favourite yet. 1/6
#MythologyMonday The 'Crowning of the Bard' is one of the two most important events each year at the Welsh National Eisteddfod. A new bardic crown is crafted for each event, and awarded for the best 'pryddest', a poem written in free metre. This crown, from the 2024 Eisteddfod, remains my favourite!
