On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas. They brought the news that the Civil War was over, and that slavery had been abolished, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. For hundreds of thousands of slaves, that day marked freedom.

The Trump Administration dragged America into an unauthorized war with no clear objective, no legitimate explanation, and no approval from Congress. Now, after all of that, America is not stronger than before this war began.

On this day 19 years ago, the Charleston Fire Department lost nine firefighters while battling a devastating inferno at a furniture store. In the years since, the Charleston community has shown time and again how it comes together to support one another through tragedy and to honor their lives.
