Only the warmer-colored male is “eared”, possessing the speckled silvery tufts on either side of the head. The female is darker, with extensive black speckling on the underparts. Bird perched on branch, photo, description from ebird: ‘A medium-sized, long-legged bird of lowland forest undergrowth on Manus in the Admiralty Islands. Mainly jet black with a red belly, extending to the center of the chest, a blue wing patch extending down from the shoulder and some green on the flight feathers. Unmistakable. Feeds on the ground, but usually sings from up in the trees. Song, a 2-note “wow-wow!” repeated at intervals.’

Bright green above with electric blue shoulder patch and rump and black head with conspicuous pale brow. Underside golden-buff with black and bright red on the belly. Juvenile duller, with little blue in wing, an orange-tipped bill, and a pinkish belly. Inhabits wooded and forested habitats on islands throughout the Banda Sea, from Seram to the Tanimbars; partially migratory. Formerly regarded as a subspecies of Elegant Pitta, to which it is very similar; look for a pale throat in present species (other “Elegant-types” are dark-throated). Song is a deep, slurred-sounding “wehr-wehr”, and call is a squeaky “skyiw!”’

Only known healthy population is in far southern Myanmar; now all but functionally extinct in southern Thailand. Male has purple-blue crown, bright yellow half-collar, and black-and-yellow underparts. Female has a pale yellow crown and black-barred yellowish breast and belly. Inhabits lowland rainforests, where it forages singly or in pairs in gullies and ditches, often near water. Gives a raptor-like “chiiir!”.’

Bird stood on ground, photo. Description from ebird: ‘Small black and green pitta with red undertail coverts and gleaming blue shoulder. Primarily green upperparts, with underparts mostly black head and underparts. Usually found feeding on the ground in rainforest patches with lots of leaf litter but has also been found in a wide variety of other habitats. During breeding season it can be quite vocal, particularly males. This is the only pitta resident in the Top End of the Northern Territory and in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.’
