Make Space for Girls

Campaigning for parks and public spaces designed with girls in mind. Reg. charity 1193772. makespaceforgirls.co.uk

Inequality in parks starts long before they're built. Planning policies often prioritise sports provision, but older girls and others, need spaces for socialising, movement, rest and simply being outdoors too. Inclusive public spaces begin with inclusive planning.

International Women's Day celebrations also come with reflection. Teenage girls are still missing from many of our parks and public spaces. Too often spaces are designed without them in mind, leaving girls feeling like there is nothing for them to do, unwelcome, or unsafe.

Designing parks for teenage girls does not mean taking space away from others. It means noticing who is not using parks and asking why. It’s about not assuming what teenagers want. It doesn't mean spaces just for teenage girls, it’s about designing spaces that girls, and others, want to use.

Could you be our next Chair Of Trustees?

Following the launch of our new three year strategy, we are recruiting a new Chair Of Trustees to take us into our next phase.

Make Space for Girls campaigns to raise awareness that parks currently exclude teenage girls. We put girls at the centre of our work. -We advocate for engaging with local teen girls -We provide research and evidence -We offer training, resources and case studies -We seek to influence policy change

Girls' use of parks drops after the age of 11. At a time when they should be gaining independence, many girls start to avoid parks. Why? They feel that parks aren’t for them - there is nothing to do. Also, many state they don’t feel safe.

Look around parks - who is missing? Teenage girls are systemically designed out of parks and public spaces. We campaign to design them in. It’s just 5 days to go until the Big Give campaign starts. Donate to Make Space for Girls between 8-15 October and every donation is doubled.

In spring 2025, girls aged 10-18 shared their thoughts and experiences of Rowntree Park in York, and other public parks more broadly. Their voices highlight what makes these spaces feel welcoming - and what could be improved. Part of a local project to raise awareness and improve things.
