Het Oekraïense Kozakken-Hetmanaat, opgericht door Bohdan Chmelnytsky (1649), bestond in de tijd dat koningen, keizers & tsaren in de rest van Europa -als erfgenamen van de troon- de dienst uitmaakten. De Kozakken echter kozen(!) hun eigen aanvoerders, genaamd 'hetmans'. #democratie

De Grondwet van Pylyp Orlyk (1710) wordt beschouwd als de 1e grondwet van Oekraïne. Hierin werd de scheiding der machten voor het eerst vastgelegd, 38 jr. voordat Montesquieu hetzelfde beschreef in zijn "De l’esprit des lois" De grondwet kan daarom gezien worden als de 1e moderne grondwet in Europa.
