An good description of one way in which Breakthrough Listen leverages radio telescope data from other projects. SETI is very much worth doing as a low-cost/low-[it seems]-probability/huge-payoff bet, but I suspect it'll end up being a useful context to work out some not necessarily related problems.

Breakthrough Listen's Automated Commensal Technosignature Survey with MeerKAT

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) is an ongoing effort to detect technosignatures, evidence of technologically capable life beyond Earth. Conducting a comprehensive SETI programme re...

My default framework is information flows, not economics, so this seems very in line with Warsh's overall intent [given his past behavior, "view" would probably over-estimate his intellectual consistency] to limit the Fed->market information flow. 1/ via @bencasselman.bsky.social

I think the overall experience will be familiar to everybody --and isn't *that* a sign of the times-- but the zoom-in look and analysis is well worth the read. I usually talk about this as _ethos_, but _institutional logics_ might be a better term.

Very good analysis of what this was and wasn't. I'd extrapolate Green's point about these tools plausible *increasing* security (better pre-deployment testing) into "AI makes systems more or less secure as a function of how much your org, community, or industry cares vs pretend to care." 1/

One of the best things about the @publicdomainrev.bsky.social is that a 2019 article will be just as fascinating as one a few hours old. From now on, I want my weekly news summary as an image in this style with links inside it. 1/

Examples aside the point about systemic structures in publishing is a very good one. The publishing world was already in over-supply: at the margin -and deterministic filtering being impossible- texts written with AI tools can't but crowd out some of the rest. via @josemarichal.bsky.social

AI-assisted fiction is already here, tons of people are reading it, very few of them realize it, and no one wants to talk about it. Gift link to my latest: www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

@adamtooze.bsky.social on --among other things-- what the European car industry was up as the China Shock was gearing up. Not quite his words but I'm reading this as an example of "pulling a Boeing": a focus on financial capabilities leading to the erosion of domain-specific institutional skills.

The European car industry riding high, leading the world in sophisticated manufacturing, earning record profits, paying out huge dividends.

This by @teorth.bsky.social has probably been already read by anybody who might want to, but it's still worth pointing out. After what happened with solar+battery prices, what's happening in math research is my favorite positive surprise of the century so far.

These dynamics echo in other areas (admin work, enterprise coding, social network content): LLMs make low/decreasing marginal utility output proportionally cheaper than high/increasing marginal utility output, hence the actor-optimal basket shifts badly. 1/ via @pwgtennant.bsky.social
