The only way to reduce methane emissions from oil and gas is to phase out oil and gas production. The oil and gas industry has had 150 years to figure out how to do it. Instead they refuse any regulation.

El Niño is an absolute monster we have now surpassed the Super El Niño of 2015-2016 with peak expected in November-December 2026. We can’t truly know how significant the 1877-1878 El Niño was in equatorial Pacific clearly very significant, but this is at least strongest event in ~150 years.

Energy nerd Christmas was yesterday, with the release of the Australia's official energy data for 2024–25. I think the share of Australia's gas being sent offshore hit a new all-time record high for the year, which is neat unless you are running an Aussie business or home that uses energy.

Australian gas production and use in the 2024–25 financial year
As with every other year in the past decade, Australia produced far more gas than it used in 2024-25.

76.5% of all the gas produced in Australia shipped overseas via one of Australia's 10 liquefied gas terminals. Another 8.3% of all the gas produced in Australia was burned by those gas export terminals and their supporting infrastructure to produce, process and compress that gas for export.

Well under one-fifth of the gas produced in Australia went to Australian users of the fuel. Gas exporters burn more of their own product preparing gas for export than any sector of Australia's domestic economy.

When farms stop yielding, hunger does not knock — it breaks the door. Across the Horn of Africa, soils that once fed nations are turning barren. This is not “bad weather.” This is climate change rewriting our food systems in real time.

Floods don’t ask for your passport. Droughts don’t care about your politics. Heatwaves don’t check your race or income. Climate change is the definition of a global crisis. It will only be solved by global leadership that puts people and planet above short-term politics. Let’s demand it.

Since Labor's revitalised safeguard started, it has done almost nothing to reduce emissions. Where abatement has occurred, by and large, it has been as a result of factors other than the safeguard, including via ACCUs and direct government support. trib.al/NR5E1k6

How to fix the safeguard measure

Offsets have failed. Almost 30 years of experience has shown they rarely work and that the failings are systemic, arising not from technical issues but the governance dynamics that develop around them – principally, the incentive to use them to manipulate prices.

While every effort must be made to keep fossil fuels in the ground and electrify Australia with cheap, clean energy, we must also prepare our communities. That means strengthening emergency responses, investing in infrastructure that builds climate resilience, and improving disaster preparedness.
