Seminiferous tubules of the testes play an important role in #sperm production. This study by @marcspehr.bsky.social &co shows that all cell types in the mouse seminiferous epithelium display unique calcium signaling patterns that are under endocrine control. 🧪#AcademicSky plos.io/3TnAWY9

Confocal microscopy images of a single seminiferous tubule section from an AHM-Cre x Ai14D male mouse depict (i) Sertoli cells that express a fluorescent protein (tdTomato; red) as well as all (ii) cell nuclei stained with DRAQ5 (cyan). Individual Sertoli cells support numerous germ cells. At the apical epithelial surface, nuclei become elongated and condensed as germ cells mature.

The project studies how the hippocampal CA1 integrates olfactory and spatial information for goal-directed navigation. The position is a 3-year DFG-funded PhD (TV-L E13, 65%) starting April 2026, jointly supervised by Prof. Tobias Ackels at University Hospital Bonn and Dr. Oliver Barnstedt at the European Neuroscience Institute Göttingen. The project uses dual-colour miniscope calcium imaging, optogenetics, and behavioural experiments in freely moving mice. Application deadline is 31 January 2026, with applications sent by email.

There's a movement in neuroscience suggesting we should be pursuing bigger bets with larger teams. I think there's a case for doing a bit of this, but I think it's a bad idea to prioritise it for two reasons, and a good case for saying we should be moving in the exact opposite direction. 🧠🧪
