I dislike the "anyone but England" stance adopted by some Scots but am relieved that England won't be winning the World Cup. Or Scotland, for that unlikely matter. We'd never have heard the end of it, either way. I am FED UP WITH FOOTBALL!!!

Wow! That is some train. As shown on the mannequin, you could imagine it being worn at the MET Gala.
Train worn #onthisday in 1856 by Empress Eugénie of France at the baptism of her only child, Louis-Napoléon, the Prince Imperial, at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. More than 6,000 guests witnessed the elaborate ceremony, which drew comparisons to a coronation. 📷 Château de Compiègne
The embroidery and beading are so beautiful!

On a very different note, I've committed myself to watching the Scotland-Haiti World Cup match (on catch-up). As a 110% footie (and especially all the surrounding hype) refusenik, I'm dreading it.
I bookmarked this weeks ago but have finally got round to reading it: "In Praise of the Middlebrow Novel" (as written by women). It's very good. open.substack.com/pub/evamayba...
In Praise of the Middlebrow Novel
Writers like E.M. Delafield, Barbara Pym, and Stella Gibbons were enormously popular in their time. Still, critics dismissed them because their concerns — home, relationships, the details of domestic ...

I had no idea the corner turrets of buildings like this housed washhouses, or that the roofs had drying greens. The tenement where I first lived (in Balornock) had a washhouse in the back court, complete with boiler.
Former Savings Bank on Govan Road in Glasgow. Designed by Eric A. Sutherlandn it was built in 1906. Like a number of Edwardian tenements in the city, it originally had a drying green on the roof and a washhouse in the top of the corner turret. #glasgow #govan #architecturephotography
A far cry from today's loungewear…
Dartmoor looking resplendent today in the richest greens of late spring before the dry golden grasses of summer take over. An equally mossy and verdant tea gown, mid #1890s Liberty, for sunny lounging #VandA #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
Marvellous, but how sad – another victim of 1960s/70s Glasgow vandalism.
A great example of "turning the corner with style". Bruce and Hay's Rutland House at 43-45 Govan Rd. Built in 1896 and pictured here in 1968 by John Hume. Sadly it was demolished in 1971. #Glasgow
Oh wow, this is great! Has @sarasheridan.bsky.social seen it? I do like Govan – it's got some great buildings. And this one's just been beautifully enhanced.

There is no shying away from a bold pattern here, a #1770s silk robe à la française glowing in blue with the creamy floral pattern across the surface. It is easy to see why textile design was so highly prized with such an expanse of cloth. Whittaker Auctions, #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
Glasgow's full of such details. Even weathered by the wind and rain, they're marvellous.
A beautifully sculpted lion around the entrance to the red sandstone Gothic style chapel in the Western Necropolis in the Lambhill area of Glasgow. Designed by James Chalmers, it was built in the 1890s. #glasgow #architecture #sculpture #architecturephotography #lambhill
Fascinating! I've often wondered what Crossmyloof meant.
A threshold mosaic at the entrance to the Corona Bar on Pollokshaws Road on the Southside of Glasgow. The symbol in the middle is a play on the local place name Crossmyloof. Cont./ #glasgow #crossmyloof #scottishhistory #architecture #maryqueenofscots

This video "UNESCO World Heritage Sites – The art of glass beads" shows just how ingrained sexism is in Italy. Watch it and count how many "craftsmen" you see… @tracychevalier.bsky.social 's The Glassmaker is all about the role of women…
Book I'm reading: The Glassmaker by @tracychevalier.bsky.social. Another novel (like @sarasheridan.bsky.social 's) that reconstructs the past so well. Tempted to read it with a map of Venice/Murano open, not to mention pictures of those intricate glass beads.
