People with chronic pain & fatigue - what accommodations do you have at work? Beyond a good desk set up and flexibility with working from home I’m a bit flummoxed over what to ask for. Grateful for any suggestions - I have an occ health apt on Tuesday

My day has been thoroughly derailed by pain and I’m extremely grumpy about it
I’ve seen so many AI generated posters for academic talks and conferences on here this week. What on earth are you thinking? 🤦♀️
In conversations with clinicians, innovators and public advisers recently, the topic of ‘alarm fatigue’ keeps coming up, so I’m finally reading @alicebennett.bsky.social ‘s Object Lessons on the Alarm
If I wasn’t currently in so much pain myself, I’d write about the hypocrisies of who is perceived to be capable of pain & whose pain is considered legitimate & whose pain is believed & whose pain is eased. Spoiler: it isn’t consistent & it’s certainly not fair. But yeah let’s wonder about this 🙄
Can the new cutting-edge AI models feel pain? They at least behave as if they do, according to a recent study. The work, which has not been peer reviewed, has divided #AI researchers. https://scim.ag/4hHU6BA
I will be so relieved when it finally gets cold again, so that I can use heat pads on my pain again
I don’t think M&S should be allowed to change their recipes without consulting me
Is it a kind of migraine aura to have a numb head save for feeling as if there’s a small bug crawling on your scalp and gently pulling at your hair? Is it something else? It vacillates between incredibly annoying and deeply worrying
I watched this when it was first out and I have just zero recollection of anything apart from a vague memory of creepiness for my fave Matthew Rhys
Tired: TV shows being un-renewed Wired: TV shows becoming un-limited
The removal of seats at bus stops really does screw us all over. Who cares about disabilities, eh? The pathetic little perch thing is useless, too low to lean on
Look, let's clear this up. LLMs can't think or understand because those are evolved capabilities of embodied living organisms embedded in the physical and social world and LLMs aren't that. Don't make it harder than it is.
Every time I see ‘anti-migrant activist’ I throw up and another part of me dies 🤮
Something nice, and refreshing, about my new workplace is that when I meet people I don’t feel like I’m being scrutinised for how useful I might be to them or looked through because I’m just another temporary person. Not everyone I’ve worked with has been like that, but it’s what I’ve often felt
Gutted and relieved! More seriously, this is where my field (med hums) can come in, because it’s fascinating the stories we tell about brains, and if people riff on the idea of there being 2 - woah, I can hear the poetry now! Great opp for science communication too!
Ok, this "there are two separate brains" thing appears to be making the rounds, and I want to be absolutely clear: this is a press office overhyping some perfectly reasonable science that won't come as a surprise to most developmental biologists.
Oh sweet relief, my awful sciatica pain has finally eased! Oh joy! I am free! I am capable of anything!!! However, it may have started up again because a car was parked across the pavement on my walk home 😫
Inside me are two brains. And one of them is Virginia Woolf

Sometimes I talk FAR TOO MUCH, I’m sorry. But please know it is either (or both) because a) I haven’t talked properly to another person for a while, or b) I have to keep talking otherwise my brain will die, suddenly shut down, and I fear it’ll never wake up again
Has anything good been written about the thermometer from a sociological, philosophical etc perspective? (Also barometer)
Part of this story has also got to be Wellcome’s introduction of time limits for their Early Career Awards. Thousands of scholars negatively impacted by that, and the closure of all their small grant streams - I’ve found academia to be really silent on this
applications TRIPLED within 5 years
I was so excited to get uni library access back, but so far anything specific I’ve sought hasn’t been in the catalogue ☹️🧐
My new role in medical technology research and development is compelling me to read STS things, especially on ethics, equity, and inequalities - any recs? (Assume I’ve read nothing)

Maybe it’s a visual bias thing, but why in online video calls am I always so much closer to the camera than anyone else? A big ugly blobfish of a presence
I had an update only today from a Swedish one
German universities: “Do you remember that job you applied for two & a half years ago? No? Oh well, never mind, but we thought you should know that we’ve now appointed someone. They were friends with the head of department, so... Mit freundlichen Grüßen…”
I’d like a magical, instant cure for sciatica please!!
I desperately, desperately need this humidity to go away 😫
On the one hand I’ve had my first Tony Chocoloney bar and it was life changing. In the other hand I ate a bit too much so I feel a bit sick and I’ve had to go have a lie down
