Ivy has everything a girl could want: a thriving pottery business, a beautiful home, and a boyfriend she loves . One weekend is all it takes to destroy her life beyond repair.
When Vince and his friends all vanish without a trace while camping in West Texas, Ivy is left alone and adrift, until a stray dog shows up on her porch. She’s always wanted a dog, and Vince has always promised her they’d get one some day, just not today, or tomorrow, or next week. Taking the dog in feels like admitting that Vince is never coming home, but Ivy has to start rebuilding her life at some point.
When Vince shows up two weeks later, cold and shivering in the middle of the night, unable to remember anything about his trip, Ivy is elated. She can see the life she’s always wanted coming back to her, and better than ever. But Vince and the dog can’t stand each other, and by shades and degrees, it becomes clear that whatever Vince went through has fundamentally changed him, and Ivy starts to wonder how different someone can become before they aren’t themselves anymore.

How Steph and Amber won’t run errands for them like I do for him, or how they insist on having something their way, how they aren’t agreeable or generous like me. I know it should be a compliment, when says he’s happy I’m not a “bitch-wife” the way they sometimes are, but it doesn't feel like one.
When we first started dating, he only ever said bitch-wife to make fun of the men who married women they clearly didn’t really like - a jab at the idea of a man who thinks his wife asking for anything makes her unreasonable. We’d laughed together about it, said we loved each other too much to ever be that mean and bitter, that we’d always do anything for each other. I'd believed it too, when he'd said he'd do anything for me.
I’m not sure when it changed, when he started to use it for real. It was slow, I guess. The kind of creep you don’t really notice until you hear it one day and it hits you that it isn't funny anymore. That it doesn’t mean what it used to. He still uses it the old way sometimes. Just enough that I can’t ever be entirely sure whether he’s really calling Steph and Amber bitches, or whether he’s mocking Mike and Jake. I like to think it’s the latter.
I’m not sure when I stopped asking for things, either. When I started to fear becoming a bitch-wife, even while refusing to admit he means it.
Texas is a state built on enduring. Enduring drought, choking heat, bitter cold, sweat in your eyes and dirt that tastes like blood in your mouth. An endless rocky, barren, bitter landscape that refuses to change, and people that refuse to accept it won't ever change. I am a true Texan.
