Silverfish have been on earth longer than any other kind of insect: over 400 million years. Modern humans have been here less than 200 thousand, making us all a bunch of total noobs.

A symphylan is not an insect; insects have six legs. They are distant relatives of the centipede and the millipede. Symphylans are much smaller than centipedes and millipedes (the size of uncooked piece of rice) and live in tiny cracks in the soil, deep underground, almost everywhere in the world.

On Cayo Coco -- a little island in the north of Cuba, not far from the Bay of Pigs and where Hemingway wrote -- we found this lovely couple of Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) butterflies. They were resting together, protected from the strong ocean winds in the shelter of a flowering bush.

A sand tiger beetle that I found watching me carefully on a Lake Erie beach, near Buffalo, New York ... Tiger beetles are the fastest-running insects on earth, by far, and their vision is amazingly good.
