This #Etruscan terracotta votive portrait head of a man is clearly modeled on a real individual. It was part of a votive deposit associated with the Manganello sanctuary in Caere, where people went to pray for healing or thank the gods for recovery. 🏺 1/ Late 2nd-early 1st c. BCE. 📸 me

A male terracotta head with reddish skin tones and residual light pigment over the hair, giving it a grayish appearance today. While initiated from a workshop press-mold, the facial features were heavily hand-modeled to achieve an intense, personalized verism: a high, deeply wrinkled forehead, an asymmetrical aquiline nose, pronounced cheekbones, and prominent ears. Rather than a generic archetype, the piece functions as an authentic individual portrait, likely offering the specific identity of a worshipper to the gods. This refined image attests to the skills and expertise of its sculptor and painter that could artistically rival any Greek or Roman counterpart.

Risso's Dolphins from Berry Head this afternoon. May seems to be a good month to see them as they are probably coming in close to shore to feed on adult Cuttlefish which have come into the shallows to lay eggs and die at this time of year.

Today I visited this awesome lake in the Chiemgau Alps of Bavaria. The weather was rainy but the colours of the water still incredible. I could see a few rainbow trouts, some brown trouts and a single char of unknown species plus a lot of minnows, and as an ornithological surplus also a merganser.
