Latest painting of Soho now available from my website (link in bio). A vertical slice of Soho. This time, Ronnie Scott's jazz club in Frith Street, London. This must be about the 5th time I've painted the club now? Ronnie Scott's Oil on canvas 32" × 12"
One of my favourite paintings of Soho. I tried to paint it without any cars or people, as I iften do. But, there is the lorry at the far end of the road, that I liked the glow of it's red lights reflected in the wet street, along with the neon from Bar Italia and Ronnie's, so left it in.
Do you know what I haven't done in ages? A miniature oil painting in a tin! These are great fun. The tin serves as my palette, easel and display, all in one. Stay tuned to see what I paint! #theblueposts #thefrenchhouse #ronniescotts #johnsimons #tinpainting
Turns out today is International Kissing Day. So I couldn't let it pass without my painting, Soho Kiss. Soho Kiss Oil on canvas 28" × 20"
Currently working on a tall narrow canvas of Ronnie Scott's jazz club. Another couple of days and it should be finished. #oilpaintinginprogress #artinprogress #fromthestudio #whatartistsdo #oilpainting
A new Soho painting added to my website (link in bio). Dusk Falls On Dean Street Oil on canvas 61cm × 50cm There's a wonderful transition when day turns to night in Soho. As the dusk falls, the light is neither daytime, or night and the atmosphere begins to change with it.
I often paint a watercolour sketch in my sketchbook before I start a new oil painting, but I've taken to painting a larger watercolour as well. I've got quite a few now and might make them available soon? #meardstreet #soholondon #sohoart #londonpainter #londonart
A quick tour of some of the Soho locations that have inspired my paintings. #soho #soholondon #paintingsoflondon #sohoart #sohopainting
My latest Soho painting, Neon Bar Soho is now live on my website (link in bio) and available to buy. It's quirky tall thin canvas, and offers a vertical slice of Soho in all its neon glory and wet pavements. Neon Bar Soho Oil on canvas 32" × 12" #greatwindmillstreet #soholondon #sohopubs
My latest Soho painting of a wet night on Great Windmill Street with the warm neon glow of the Bar sign lighting the wet street. Available from my website tomorrow. #sohopubs #soholondon #londonart #sohoart #greatwindmillstreet
Just finished a new Soho painting. A wet day in Meard Street. I love Meard Street. Not only is it a fine example of 1720's architecture. But, home to some famous nightclubs and notable residents. Can you name any? Meard Street, Soho Oil on canvas 24" × 16" Available from website, or DM for details.
Currently on the easel. A painting of Meard Street Soho on a rainy day that I started in February. But, somehow forgot all about and it got stacked amongst a load of other canvases. I'm currently doing more abstract landscapes, so it's nice to be working on something more realistic for a few days.
Quite an abstract one for this view of the brutalist Brunswick Centre. I'm blaming the heat. Brunswick Oil on board 32" × 24" #brutalism #brutalistarchitecture #modernistlondon #brutalistart #abstractmodern
A newish painting. I started it back in March, but only just finished it. Another view of the National Theatre on the Southbank. Southbank III Oil on canvas 28" × 20" Soon to be available from my website. Or DM me now. #southbanklondon #urbanlandscapeart #brutalistarchitecture #brutalism
An old painting from 2024, but fits with my current series of paintings that take urban scenes and simplify them to defined geometric forms. Post Office Tower Acrylic on canvas 24" × 16" #postofficetower #precisionism #modernistlondon #londonart #bttower
New painting. Rooftops SW1 Oil on canvas 16" × 16" As I sat in traffic in Knightsbridge, I looked up and saw the evening sun catching all the chimney stacks and rooftops above the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. #rooftoppainting #londonart #precisionism #londonrooftops #paintingsoflondon
They say, "paint what you love", and I love the art made by British artists in the late 40's, early 50's. And my latest painting I think has a hint of post-war aesthetics. Albeit of a very modern view of the City of London. City Panorama Oil on canvas 24" × 16" Available soon on my website.
Another new painting in my series of cubist style paintings of brutalist architecture. This one is of the Brunswick Centre in Bloomsbury. In the late 80s I lived just across the road and regularly did my washing in the laundrette there. Perspective Brunswick Oil on canvas 18" × 18"
A new painting added to my website, part of my series that I'm calling Modern Cubism. Southbank II Oil on canvas 24" × 16" A painting of the National Theatre on London's Southbank. Painted in an abstract cubist style to convey the blocks and shadows of the brutalist architecture.
I can laugh about it now, but the stress caused by DPD, who over a month ago lost my painting Southbank I in transit to my customer. Then, eventually retrieve it only to keep it in their depot for 11 days with no action! The Wanted poster is a homage to Freud's stolen painting of Francis Bacon.
A reminder that my studio clearout sale ends on Sunday. But, also a reminder that you can buy my paintings of Soho. Like this doorway which is sadly a victim of regeneration and no longer exists. Please visit my website (link in bio), or message me! Sleazy Soho Doorway Oil on canvas 24" × 16"
Today's featured painting in my studio clearout sale is a large portrait depicting the feeling of suppressed rage and frustration that can sometimes be felt within. If you're interested in this painting, it is available on my website via the link in my bio. Suppression Oil on board 81cm × 61cm
A painting available in my studio clearout sale is this portrait of a woman with interesting tattoos. I painted a grisaille monochromatic underlayer. It gives the skin tone a nice luminosity. For sale at a reduced price on my website. Link in bio. Woman With Tattoos Oil on canvas 50cm × 50cm
As today was Record Store Day, here's a little oil painting of one of my favourite record shops, Reckless Records in Berwick Street. Reckless Records Oil on board 18cm × 13cm #recklessrecords #brewerstreet #recordstore #sohorecordshop #recordstoreday
I saw a beautiful Roberto Ferri painting yesterday and spontaneously started a copy of it in pastel. I seem to be going through another phase of doing nudes! #pastelpainting #femalenudeart #nudeart #femalenudestudy #robertoferri
Disappointed to see the neon lights of La Bodega Negra no longer in Old Compton Street. I always intended to paint them on a rainy night with the reflections bouncing off the pavement. Thankfully, I have painted a scene of them, with a couple kissing outside. Soho Kiss Oil on canvas 28" × 20"
Today's featured painting in my Spring Studio Sale is a quirky one, as it's a self-portrait, and inspired by the story from Greek mythology of Selene, the Moon goddess, who fell in love with a human on Earth called Endymion. Apparently they had 50 kids!! The Lunatic Oil on board 55cm × 46cm
This mornings featured painting in my Spring Studio Sale (link in bio) is this experimental oil of a trumpet player that I painted trying to emulate the style of Francis Bacon. Jazz Trumpeter Oil on canvas 20" × 16"
