Author and instigator-in-chief of the scribes. Former professional archivist and records manager. Lives in the Dark Peak with more fountain pens than he realistically needs. Does not use AI. For more details visit scriptoriumscribes.com

In the Scriptorium today, the scribes have spent all morning trying to convince the printer that it really doesn't need a new colour toner cartridge as they only want to print one page in black and white. They will spend this afternoon trying to convince the printer to connect to wifi.

In the Scriptorium today, the scribes are making up book titles for the Imaginary Library. Their favourite so far is “Stick It Where The Sun Don’t Shine: A Guide to Mushroom Cultivation for Beginners”. They welcome additional contributions. Dewey decimal information not required.

In the Scriptorium today, the scribes remembered which month they had last done a newsletter so have rushed one out. They will not be telling anyone where it is available as they've tried that and nobody is interested, apart from one of the scribe's sisters and six bots.

The thought occurred that when I was a kid, my dad (who worked in computers in the 1960s) used to say that computers don’t make mistakes, people do. With the advent of AI, I have just realised that I can tell him that not only do they make mistakes, they also hallucinate and tell lies.

In the Scriptorium today, the scribes have learnt that three former Presidents of the USA died on the 4th of July, which seems statistically significant given how many there have been and that the year lasts for 365 days. They now have a sweepstake running and are watching the news with interest.

In the Scriptorium today, the scribes are happy to report that coffee made with solar power tastes exactly the same as coffee made using non-renewable power. The same is also true of marmalade on toast.

In the Scriptorium, the solar panel installation is complete. Despite it being overcast, the priory is running on only the panels and the batteries are being charged. Mrs Pritchett is now baking that long overdue Lemon Drizzle Cake. The prior has gone for a lie down as he's just paid the bill.

In the Scriptorium today, no work is getting done because of all the drilling and banging going on. Solar panels are being installed, so the scribes have downed quills and are having the day off. Mrs Pritchett would have baked one of her famous Lemon Drizzle Cakes, but the power is off.

This is only half of the sushi I made earlier today. I said I made too much rice. As it’s another hot day forecast for tomorrow i know what lunch will be. Tea will be a ploughman’s *IF* I can summon up the enthusiasm to make crusty bread in this heat.

Two dishes laden with sushi, one of maki and one of nigiri

“It’s too hot to cook,” I said last night. “I know,” I said. “I’ll get up early when it’s cooler and make sushi rice.” This might have been a mistake. It is entirely possible that I made too much sushi rice. I have now made enough sushi to last for several days. I do not regret my decision.

Having completed all the edits I can for the various novels I have in the pipeline, I had the idea to unify the look of the various books I have that are in print to make them stand out more as mine. Then I picked up the first one and started reading. I reckon I could edit out at least 10k words.

Disillusioned with writing in today, I’ve had an idea for something else. This is a far from complete, but at least it shows I’m having a go myself rather than letting AI slop do its thing.

A partially complete illustration of the silhouette of a boy peering through a telescope. The outlines have been pencilled and are in the process of being inked. Only the edges have been done.

Where I'm up to with "All Steamed Up" (in which a town in north-west England holds a Victorian weekend and it all goes horribly wrong). Draft zero: Done Early drafts: Done Feedback received: Oh, I see what you mean Structural edit: Done Copy edit: Done Line edit: Let's enjoy this weekend off first

Gulp. I've pressed the button to have a solar panel array installed on the roof, with two whacking great batteries to go with it. I don't know what I should be feeling, but I'm fairly certain that 'OMG What have I just done?' shouldn't be one of them.
