"Unable to find 'class' with name 'UAbilitySystemComponent'" Why are there sarcastic air quotes around "class"?

Hey folks. I could use some help bridging the next two months while I wait for my SDI payments to kick in. Come Oct, those will sustain me and my family for the foreseeable future, but in the meantime we still have Aug and Sept to get through. gofund.me/f720613b5

I don't use chat programs except a couple times as a lark, and the conversation was like: "What do you think of this essay I wrote?" "It's great blah blah." (ego gratification) "You don't have access to the link you're barred from that site." "You're right I didn't read it muh bad!"
YouTuber Hank Green Admits He Has Unhealthy Relationship With AI After Facing Backlash Over Recent Video 'The level of dopamine I've been getting from interacting with LLMs is not healthy for me,' said Green
I prefer to talk about mechanics and structure. The two of those together typically cover "gameplay loops" in ways that are IMO more useful. Super Mario is a platforming (running jumping) game and the structure is 8 worlds, 4 levels each, always ending in a castle.
I've been making this point about the "gameplay loop" terminology for a long time, glad to see someone with an audience making it. youtu.be/eac2iPSrdmA?... I even use the same example of chapters in a book not forming a meaningful loop.

I think it's very important and very freeing to understand that sometimes bad people can make good things, and sometimes good people can make bad things. There's no need to pretend that the work a bad person did was bad! (Doubly so if they're no longer alive, then it's just silly!)
A lot of people will try to convince themselves that the thing was always bad. It wasn't bad when you consumed it. It wasn't bad when it influenced you. It wasn't bad when you turned that inspiration into your own art. Unfortunately, a bad person (in my case, Shane Carruth) made it.
I'm kind of a luddite so today instead of getting an Uber I tried to get a cab. It took 10 minutes on the phone to set up and 30 seconds after I hung up I got a text that read: "i m to far"
This is my big sticking point with "Marvel-style" writing - I wish characters would more often say what they would say in a real scenario. Competent professional trying to keep the person on the other end of the call alive is going to concisely deliver important information
"Any updates for me" "Uh kinda - you'll know it when you hear it." If you know there's a big monster that makes a crazy noise you should probably clearly communicate that! This is such "what would the standard female arch radio-voice video game character say?" writing.
I don't understand why a lot of the general public seems tired of this sort of thing but it seems like not a single person involved in video game writing is tired of it. Surely there must be people working on big games who are also tired of the "he's right behind me" stuff?
And even the dialogue that hasn't been changed or recast has been rerecorded to sound smug and/or "he's right behind me isn't he"
I think this is very true but I also think pubs are partly to blame in that they often lean into and promote their most spicy takes. You can have a website with 99 good articles on it and everyone will talk about the 1 bad one, in part because that's the one most promoted.
Sometimes it kinda feels like people either get mad at things they assume are true about games media, or get mad about one specific blog but just pass it off like it’s emblematic of media as a whole. Some days where I’m kinda left wondering how much people actually read these pubs.

Good read. The one caveat I would add is that I personally see a large distinction between *actual* currencies (gold) and "currencies" like monster parts in Monster Hunter. In my experience actual currency (or the ability to easily convert to currency and back) is often unsatisfying.
New Blog Post: Progression Design and the Surface Area Problem This one is about progression systems and how we apportion access to the game's possibility space via rewards. #GameDesign
1. This is not technical evaluation. This may be a technically accomplished individual but that doesn't mean they have the technical side of their brain currently switched on. This is purely emotional / religious zeal, totally laughable on a technical basis.
The guy featured in this piece has been totally one-shot by AI. He thinks AI is basically his wife now and he's crusading against anti-AI bigotry. (The worst kind of bigotry!) This is not technical at all really, it's solely a function of personality, politics, etc.
I told glenn he *had* to check his networking libraries with a frontier model, despite of course AI being fucking horrible; it *immediately* found a huge fucking stack in years old foundational code used by tons of games.
It's pretty hard for fiction to be unethical, assuming it's not written on human skin in blood. "It depicts non-consensual elements!" Yes but reading is constant affirmative consent, if you don't want to read about a non-consensual relationship simply don't read the next word in the sentence!
Absolutely nothing wrong with regulating your content intake. Or with having genre preferences. But calling this content “ethical” isn’t just opening up a can of worms, it’s unearthing a whole damn lawn.
Nintendo responding to the tariff recovery lawsuit with "lmao turns out your decisions have consequences who knew?"
You can open Adobe Firefly right now and ask it to render a wine glass full to the brim and it won't do it, because it has no idea what "wine" "glass" "full" or "brim" mean or how to combine those, because it can't think and fundamentally has no mechanism for understanding anything.
Could AI be conscious?
Hot new trend in gaming company management: Save money and reduce risk by not greenlighting any game. This way you can keep your team small, reduce costs, and maintain a reliable revenue of negative all your spending.
I've seen people referencing posts and videos about the original vision for Marathon, and it does sound a lot more interesting. But also a lot harder to make, which is I assume why they pivoted. It would require like 20x the map size, for one thing.
Someone on ResetEra posted this. I still vividly remember this, is was the first screenshots I saw of SF2. It particularly stands out because my neighbor had already played it and told me about a stretchy Indian character, which I thought meant Native American.... (different time!)

I think this is one of the main reasons remakes are attractive to studios and will continue to be common: the decision-making has already been done. If you're doing a remake (depending on the scope) you have to tweak things and make production-level decisions but the game design is done-ish.
I keep seeing arguments for games being expensive due to hyper realistic expectations for art, or simply lots of art. What I don’t see is the actual most costly reason: Indecision Iteration is good, but the yearly rebuilding of entire characters, storylines, and levels, is the most expensive thing
Ima be real here this is not a winning concept for a superhero.
Hi again! New week, new looking for work post. I am in desperate need of full time work. Looking for animation, art, administrative or other things outside of the games industry. My email is lindseywailes@gmail.com or DM me on here! Feel free to reach out just to chat as well :) Thank you!!! ❤️
Hey everyone! I wanted to update my pinned post. ✨I have 5 years experience as an animator in the games industry. 🎨Looking for Animation, Concept Art, QA, Administrative, and other similar roles. 💼 Open to Remote or anywhere on the West Coast of the US. Thank you! #animator #animation
The context here is they're talking about the "Promise to America", which is a website you can visit, read from top to bottom, and have no idea what the actual promise is beyond "stay the course." The website says "We, the undersigned, make this Promise To America" and then there's no promise lol.
This paragraph gave me an epiphany about Matty Y. It's not that he doesn't understand how politics words. It's that fundamentally, he doesn't understand *what politics is.*
When Andy Masley wrote about this he said it was because data centers have black roofs, because that's what Claude told him.
“(Researchers) found surface temperatures increased by an average of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit after a data center started operations…Strikingly, the impacts weren’t limited to a data center’s immediate surroundings; temperature increases affected areas up to 6.2 miles away.”
At some point I'm going to write up something about retro gaming, remakes, and how it's more than just nostalgia - key point is that in many cases those games are more "gamey" and in some ways more in line with what people want, including higher proportion of time spent actually playing the game.
I wonder if there’s logic in designing games with as little obvious downtime (breaks after levels that require your input to progress past, as an example) to prevent people from taking out their phone for ten+ minutes at a time.
You can tell this is genuine statement from the developers at Id because it talks about flat structures and makers, which is exactly how real game developers talk!
