Nationals have requested unconditional release waivers on Joey Wiemer. Surprise star of the season’s first week had been at AAA for months. And when they called up Andrew Pinckney over him yesterday, that was probably the writing on the wall.

What happens when the highest-scoring lineup in MLB trades away its best right-handed hitter, then the NL’s leader in slugging, then loses one of the best offensive players in the sport to injury? Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park is what happens. natsjournal.com/p/depleted-l...
Depleted lineup is suddenly a shell of itself
With James Wood on the IL and Luis García Jr. and Curtis Mead playing for other teams, the remaining Nationals hitters are in a major slump
natsjournal.com
Final: Phillies 5, Nats 0. The Nationals' 7th straight loss saw a depleted lineup go 0-for-11 with RISP. They were 55-53 a week ago and 1 game out of wild-card position. They're now 55-60 and 6 1/2 games out.
Nats LHP Palmquist at Phillies LHP Luzardo (6:40/Nationals TV/106.7 FM)
Andrew Pinckney has arrived from Scranton (where Rochester was playing) and has officially had his contract purchased by the Nationals. He's not in tonight's lineup, even though they're facing a lefty in Jesus Luzardo.
James Wood is going on the IL for the first time in his MLB career, but the Nationals are relieved his left oblique strain is mild. natsjournal.com/p/wood-going...
Wood going on IL with mild oblique strain, Pinckney getting called up
The Nationals are placing James Wood on the 10-day IL for the first time in his MLB career and promoting outfielder Andrew Pinckney from Triple-A
natsjournal.com
LHP Will Dion, acquired in the Foster Griffin trade, has been added to the Nationals’ active roster. Made 12 relief appearances for Cleveland this year, striking out 25 while walking only 3 batters.
LHP Carson Palmquist will open for the Nationals tonight.

6th Straight Loss After Trading Griffin — Nats Chat Podcast
Foster Griffin Traded to Cleveland
natschatpodcast.com
Blake Butera insisted his first career ejection was just a “heat of the moment” thing. But he certainly would’ve been justified for letting a week’s worth of frustration boil over in that moment. natsjournal.com/p/emotions-r...
Emotions run hot at end of frustrating week
Hours after Foster Griffin became the latest to be traded, Blake Butera was ejected for the first time and the Nationals bullpen blew another lead
natsjournal.com
Nationals optioned Eddy Yean to Triple-A Rochester after tonight's game. They'll add another reliever tomorrow.
James Wood hurt his left side on his last swing in the 6th. Going for an MRI tomorrow.
Final: Phillies 6, Nats 3. Abimelec Ortiz and Daylen Lile hit early homers to give them a 3-0 lead. Andrew Alvarez carried a shutout into the 7th. Blake Butera was ejected for the first time. The rest ... well, you've seen that before. Nats drop their 6th straight.
Paul Toboni on the Foster Griffin trade, extension talks with the lefty prior to the deadline and his overall vision at this stage of the season: natsjournal.com/p/nats-deal-...
Nats deal Griffin to Guardians for four prospects in final trade-deadline deal
President of baseball operations Paul Toboni completed a late-summer sell-off with this evening's trade of All-Star lefty Foster Griffin to Cleveland
natsjournal.com
Cleaning up a couple other trade deadline items: * RHP Yovanny Cruz (acquired yesterday in the Luis Garcia Jr. trade) was added to the active roster, taking Foster Griffin's spot * The Nationals traded AAA OF Christian Franklin to the Orioles for AA RHP Joe Glassey
Nats LHP Alvarez at Phillies RHP Nola (6:40/Nationals TV/106.7 FM)
While the Nationals would have loved to sign Foster Griffin to an extension, it always felt like a long shot to happen before the deadline. And rather than risk losing him as a free agent, they felt it was worthwhile to get four young players for him now.
Nationals have indeed traded Foster Griffin to Guardians. The four players they're receiving, per source: AA LHP Josh Hartle (CLE's No. 25 prospect), AAA LHP Will Dion, AA RHP Kendeglys Virguez and AA OF Nick Mitchell. (First reported by @feinsand.bsky.social and @spencernusbaum.bsky.social)
Could be awhile until Nats put out a lineup and roster for tonight’s game. Blake Butera is preparing for various possibilities, depending on what happens at the deadline. Related: Both Yovanny Cruz and Jake Bird are here and could be added to the active bullpen.
Abimelec Ortiz has been recalled from Rochester, so he becomes the new left-handed half of the Nationals’ 1B platoon.
CJ Abrams was named NL Player of the Month for July.
LHP Andrew Alvarez has been recalled from AAA and will start tonight’s game in Philly.

Grown-up García bids farewell after decade in Nationals organization
The Nats officially traded Luis García Jr. to the Yankees on Sunday for four pitchers, ending a long relationship with a popular player and teammate

The trade has officially been announced. The Nationals optioned Riley Cornelio and Jake Bird to AAA and transferred PJ Poulin to the 60-day IL. So, Yovanny Cruz will join the MLB roster tomorrow, as well as another pitcher and a replacement for Luis García Jr.
The Nationals have finalized the trade, sending 1B Luis Garcia Jr. to the Yankees for four pitchers: Yovanny Cruz and Jake Bird (already MLB relievers), Jack Cebert (NYY's No. 14 prospect) and Ben Grable (No. 25), source confirms.
Luis Garcia Jr. is still flying with the Nats to Philly this evening, but he spoke as if he expects to be officially told he's been traded at some point. "It's a mix of both sad and happy. This is a new chapter in my career. 50-50 right now."
