I don't live in Palo Alto so early on in my postdoc I was determined to learn the roads on campus and would leave my phone in the trunk when I had to drive/walk to meetings. The number of meetings I ended up just not going to because I got lost is greater than zero. But I know the campus now.

If you're an institution looking to bump up your US News ranking, I just want to point out that every school I've been affiliated with (SDSU, NYU, Harvard, Stanford) has gone up in ranking. I'm not saying it's causal — but you could hire me and find out.

Reappointment is official. Cancelled all my meetings and now I just need to figure out if I want a boozy brunch or a long bike ride.
I had my mid-tenure review recently. Today, the child asked me how it went, and I told I needed more awards and more grant money. So she gave me this award. Which is fine, I guess, but I'd rather have the money.
If being on study section has taught me anything, it's that my bar for grant submission is way way too high.

Let go of the idea of the perfect grant. The quest for perfection is a fools errand & counterproductive to the goal of being funded.
