I'm sharing this for #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. It can feel like there's a lot of societal pressure to hide your pain. Resist that if you can, let people know you're suffering, and ask for the support you deserve.

Everything is overwhelming. Here's a reminder from myself and @gemmacorrell.bsky.social that it's always okay to admit that you're struggling to hold onto any sense of optimism, hope, or happiness. Speak up because you deserve support.

The brightly colored art by Gemma Correll indicated that this "advice" is dripping with irony. The text reads:

"HOW TO PRETEND TO BE HAPPY

1. Practice Fake Smiles

Practice smiling in the mirror. Wider. No, I said WIDER. Smile harder, damn it! You suck at this. Nobody else needs to practice smiling, so you must be broken. That's why you don't deserve happiness. SMILE!

There, that wasn't so hard. Now just do that all day, every day, until people learn what a fraud you are."

Every single person who wants you to be OUTRAGED that the mayor of New York City is attending a 9/11 memorial would absolutely want you to be OUTRAGED if the mayor of New York City skipped a 9/11 memorial.

Okay Disney, I have a premise for a season-long arch that's guaranteed to keep viewers tuning in. In the first episode, guest star Daniel Radcliffe and Rowlf The Dog are practicing dangerously fast patter songs backstage... but wait! What's that intriguing thing behind them? It's a message... There are currently no active conversations for a full ‘MUPPET SHOW’ series revival. Disney, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures have had difficulties with deciding on a premise for the series that they can all agree on. (Source: Deadline)

Rewatching "It's A Wonderful Life" is a Christmas tradition, but this quote is worth remembering year round. #SuicidePreventionDay

AI has the same marketing strategy as fascism. It's meant to appeal to people who yearn to be unapologetically mean. The message isn't "AI helps you get ahead." It's "Half of the population will lose their jobs. Using AI will let you mock their pain."

They say that porn helped drive early adapters to emerging technologies like the VCR and the internet. AI is different that that. Sure, there's AI porn out there, but AI is proving most appealing to people who get off on something else: Fascism. (1/X)

Sara Bareilles auditioned for a production of Into The Woods. She didn't get the part. Jessie Mueller did. Bareilles later wrote the musical Waitress which starred... Jessie Mueller! Zero grudges held! That fun fact would be unremarkable if we didn't live in a world run by The Pettiest Man Alive.

This is a promotional image that was used for the premiere Broadway production of the musical Waitress. It features a photo of the star Jessie Mueller holding a slice of pie. The text reads:

"A New Broadway Musical Baked From The Heart
WAITRESS
Starring Tony Award Winner
Jessie Mueller
Music & Lyrics
Sara Bareilles
Book
Jessie Nelson
Director
Diane Paulus
Based Upon The Motion Picture Written By
Adrienne Shelly"

The most important fact about the arch is that Trump is breaking ground BEFORE he has approval to build his new monument to himself. Just like he knocked down the East Wing before he had a finished design for the ballroom. This is how he handles everything. Destroy first, plan second.

This is a post from the New York Times. The blurb says "Breaking News: President Trump is breaking ground on his 250-foot tall triumphal arch near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, even before a federal review panel has approved the project."

The New York Times is shamelessly using a photo of what the arch is supposed to look like instead of showing a picture of what's actually happening: A big destructive mess is being made.

Once again we find ourselves following a developing story of a mass shooting. Although it's natural to want more details, it might be helpful to instead focus on what it FEELS like to NOT KNOW exactly what happened. In this hazy period where we don't know how many... (1/10)

At least one person was killed and multiple others were wounded — including two police officers — in a shooting at an apartment complex in downtown Minneapolis.

The people promoting AI failed to learn a key lesson from School House Rock: The animated educational songs were successful because they were *authentic.* Most of the composers came from jazz and folk backgrounds, so that's what they wrote. They didn't try to imitate a popular "rock" sound...

Don't watch the Harry Potter trailer. Watching it gives WB "engagement." Don't even visit pages that *post* the video. Page clicks motivate media outlets to give the series more free publicity. These companies will only do the right thing when doing the wrong thing becomes less profitable.

Some authors say they didn’t *write* their books with AI, but they needed to use it for the *cover* because they couldn’t afford an artist. To prove that’s not true, I am offering authors FREE cover design by me, a former graphic designer. They probably won’t be great, but they’ll be better than AI.

Texas suspended the voter registration of 1.2 million residents. (That's about the total population of Wyoming and Vermont combined.) SCOTUS ruled to uphold Trump's executive order curtailing mail-in voting. These latest acts of voter suppression remind me of this news item from 1940.

The effort to pass the SAVE Act reminds me of this old 1940 newspaper clipping that my dad found. It's about one man's adventures in voter suppression. The headline reads "Democrat Abandoned Atop House--Walter Cook, Roofer, Unable to Get Down to Vote When GOP Employer Takes Ladder." (1/X)

Google and Apple helped change the name of Lake Ontario on their maps *years ago* by funding Trump, by donating to his inauguration, by showing up to his events, by honoring him with gold plaques and by all of their other actions that lent their aura of legitimacy to an insane fascist.

re: everyone yelling about Google Maps - Maps just ingests the official data source for each country, which is GNIS in this case, and most other online maps will follow for American users nobody at Google is making an active decision to go in and change names in Maps directly

In grade school math, you can find the "absolute value" on a number line by measuring the distance from zero and ignoring whether the distance was positive of negative. "Absolute value" is how we got to where we are now. For some people, destroying things FEELS the same as creating things. (1/X)

This image of a number line comes from CueMath (cuemath.com.) It explains that 4 has the same absolute value as negative 4.

Instead of joining the Broadway cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Rupert Grint should have said “No, and here’s why” in the most public way possible. However much they’re paying him, they’re paying Rowling more. Estimates suggest she gets between 31 to 41 percent of the show’s net profits.
