One of the more interesting economic stats to watch is personal savings rate, this one for folks in the US, which has dropped to 2.7%, less than half what it was in early 2024. Recessions in 2001 and 2008 were both preceded by savings rates below 5%.
I did a 1500m main swim set tonight at the pool - having a single set that matches my next upcoming race distance for probably the first time this year. It’s not really the most effective way to train, but it certainly does build confidence that the distance is covered. #triathlon
Chicken skewers, cucumber salad made with cucumbers from a friend’s garden, gf rotini made with pesto from our own basil 🧑🍳
So I’ve been continuing my review of #Winnipeg civic election happenings - and of course, there are more AI slop renderings of the incumbent mayor that don’t look anything like him. This one is from Mike Vogiatzakis on July 24, and that definitely isn’t Scott Gillingham on the left:
Someone I work with sent me 16 emails in 10 minutes on the Friday before a long weekend. #duckandcover

So I have my Ioniq 5 in the shop today for some kind of special EV inspection - the best I can gather is they’re checking some stuff before giving me a free adapter that connects to NACS (Tesla-style) DC fast chargers. What they need to inspect is not clear to me - the car is working great.
Hmm, lots of notifications from Hydro about power outages affecting us, but no actual outage at home. Hope our neighbours are doing ok!
So The Odyssey was great - an incredible cast, wonderful costumes and score, and a particular execution that makes the ancient world feel contemporary and connected. The commitment to visceral, practical effects makes an impact.
Settling in to watch The Odyssey as Christopher Nolan intended - with a margarita in hand, probably going to the bathroom twice
I think Umar Hayat is my fav fringe candidate for mayor of #Winnipeg. His latest social media posts just have him out golfing, with a floating bit of text about how to reduce “crime” with no answer to the question in the caption or the audio
I think he is, unfortunately, quite correct about our viable options given the time available. He also has the good sense to phrase our current situation as something other than “We had time to make better long-term decisions and multiple governments frittered it away”

I love local politics. Today, my fav find in the campaign for Winnipeg’s mayor is this: real estate agent Umar Hayat is posting from a trip to Italy with various Winnipeg election promises. In this one, he tries to convince a pigeon in Rome that they should take a photo together.
I wrote 12 of ‘em! It’s a massive team effort that I can’t believe we pull off every year 🎭📝

Bike Trainer trash TV reviews: The Ultimatum is extremely unhealthy at its core and I can’t look away
I bought a Ninja Slushi today and it is both the dumbest and best kitchen appliance ever (currently chilling some lime margaritas)
Prepping to lead worship at my church this Sunday, and Amos is a little bracing:
The singer from Of Monsters and Men “We only have bumblebees in Iceland… it’s so nice to see dragonflies with my own eyes.” 🥺
Kathleen Edwards playing lots of stuff off her latest (2025) album Billionaire, which is great. Tells us she has spent many birthdays (yesterday!) in Winnipeg because of the timing of Folk Fest! #folkfesthappy
Sitting in the baking sun at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, listening to Billy Bragg singing "Fascists are Bound to Lose." Fuck, yeah.
Not the best angle to catch Red River Rambler, as there are a couple of musicians in back too, but they’re a very solid and enjoyable Métis fiddle group. Get your toes tapping, and even at +33 they’ve got a few people jigging! #folkfesthappy
The Vaudevillian is a very cute ragtime band - here performing “Baby your biscuits are plenty big enough for me” 🤣 #folkfesthappy
