Shade is the form light takes when it meets something solid. A shape traced along the surface.
It's been one week since Shade Songs has arrived, along with the first glimpse of Autumn. I’m so happy to find the work resonating, and grateful for the kind words and support.

patterns of light and shadow cast across a mossy green rock.

There’s a lot happening in the world that I don’t know how to make sense of. Creating music has always given me a way to spend some time somewhere else. Not necessarily to escape, but to make a little room for myself.

Matthew Hiram sits among the trees in a forest, holding a modular synthesizer surrounded by green foliage.

When I started making my new album, I wanted to create the feeling of sitting beneath a large tree.
As the music developed, I found deeper meaning in the concept of shade, exploring how we can learn from this natural balance of light and shadow.

Happy Autumn Equinox!

Sitting in the shade under a big beautiful tree always feels so good, like you’re being embraced by this massive, ancient, living being. Beyond the physical space, I’m interested in the emotional sense of comfort and safety that comes with it. Photo by Natalie Jennings

Huge thanks to Joe Muggs & @thequietus.com for featuring my work! It means a lot to be included in the growing conversation around plant music and bio-data sonification. 🌱⚡️

On the 50th anniversary reissue of Mort Garson's Mother Earth’s #Plantasia, a cult classic attempt to communicate with plants via Moog, Joe Muggs selects 10 more examples of musicians plugging themselves into the green stuff The Strange World of Music Made By and For Plants buff.ly/gEaabW2

This Summer I've been thinking about slowing down, connecting through sound, and building relationships with the music we return to. I wrote about it in my latest piece, with reflections on 10 recent releases that have stuck with me.

'Solarium Songs' came out just over a year ago. Looking back, it's been a blur. Minneapolis has been a hard place to be this year. Some seasons, just keeping each other safe is what counts. A year later, I want to mark the album properly.

Album cover for Hiram's 'Solarium Songs.' Backlit houseplant leaves fill the frame in silhouette and green, with bright sunlight flaring through the center and a small blue lens flare dot below. The title text 'HIRAM' in white and 'SOLARIUM SONGS' in pale yellow appears near the top.
