Ah the Soldier. The last in this little series of design notes. The soldier was one of the KOTOR 6 and pretty easy to make a playbook for. Star ‘Wars’ need star soldiers after all. The combat specialties were a lot of fun, and I think make this playbook deceptively versatile.

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Soldier Many forget about the boots on the ground who fight and die in those far off galactic battles. You may not be on the front lines anymore with this new crew, but you will always be a soldier at heart. Who's your favorite Soldier in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a humanoid cyborg with a large blaster. The title says "The Soldier" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

Algo-be-damned, here’s the second of these lil design journal posts today since I missed one over the weekend. Another of the “KOTOR 6” and the only one of the Jedi that did not get renamed. This one felt like it could have been cut, but I felt like it has huge untapped potential for role players.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 2mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Sentinel Most Jedi leave a part of themselves behind to join the order, but not you. Wielding the Force never came as easy to you as other Jedi, so you focus on technical skills like slicing, tinkering, and networking. 🛠️ Who's your favorite Sentinel in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a humanoid elephant alien tinkering with tools on a table. The title says "The Sentinel" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

Alright, I fell behind so you’re getting a two-fer today. This is one of the “KOTOR 6” and one of the few playbooks that I took a long look at cutting from the game. A playbook should have a clear story to tell and it was tough to give this one its own lane between Bounty Hunter and Scoundrel, BUT…

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 2mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Scout You can fly with the best of the Jedi. You can hit a womp rat from a parsec away. You, your starfighter, and your rifle can go anywhere in the Galaxy, and tackle anything together. Who's your favorite Scout in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a smirking alien with head tentacles holding a device in one hand. They have a rifle strapped to their back. The title says "The Scout" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

With the Scoundrel, it took me a while to pin down what the narrative aspect of the playbook should be. What could I provide as a springboard to make sure players were set up to tell a great story. Thankfully the Crooked from MotW had just what I needed.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 2mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Scoundrel Who’s scruffy lookin? You’re the best in the Galaxy at what you do. At least that’s what you tell everyone. Through guile, misdirection, or sheer luck, you’ve made a name for yourself as a certified scoundrel. Who's your favorite Scoundrel in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a four armed alien with multiple eyes holding blasters in their top hands and shuffling cards in their lower hands. The title says "The Scoundrel" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

Like it or not, redemption is one of the strongest thru-lines in Star Wars. This playbook is a fun way to gamify that and break some of the conventions of this game’s dark side system. You start with Your Path and a Dark Master, and this playbook will be pulling you in both directions constantly.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 2mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Redeemed You caved to the ever-present temptation of the Dark Side, and wreaked terrible havoc against innocents. You may never feel completely like you have atoned, but you will work every day to try. Who's your favorite Redeemed in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a humanoid with a cybernetic spine holding a lightsaber. The title says "The Redeemed" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

Star Wars has always been political. From Leia’s hiding her rebel activity under the guise of a diplomatic mission to the long winded Senate sessions of the prequels to Andor’s tense party scenes where Mon Mothma is balancing the nascent rebellion on a razor’s edge.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 2mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Politician After battles are won by the soldiers and the pilots, there are those who must continue to wage wars on the senate floor. You are well connected, and you know how to grease wheels to get stuff done. Who's your favorite Politician in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a humanoid with wisping hair tentacles and luxury clothing. The title says "The Politician" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

This is by far the most popular Jedi playbook and for good reason. In many ways the “wayward warrior with a code” is the original vision for the Jedi, and I think a lot of players are slightly uncomfortable being connected to the more… dogmatic Jedi archetypes.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 2mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Outcast The Jedi have a lot of rules. Some of them have never sat well with you. It may not have been your choice to leave the order, but their flaws are clearer to you every day. Who's your favorite Outcast in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a humanoid with a big wide hat and a staff style lightsaber. The title says "THE OUTCAST" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

The Master was originally called “the Consular” which you’ll know if you were a KOTOR fan. It was important to cue in on the trope of ‘you’ve accomplished greatness; you’ve made mistakes; and you have one last mission’ that is prevalent in everyone from Yoda to Obi-Wan to Sequel Luke.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 2mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Master You have mastered the mental disciplines of the teachings. You wield the Force in wonderful and surprising ways, only resorting to lightsaber combat when absolutely necessary. Who's your favorite Jedi Master in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a hunched over four eyed alien with floating rock chunks and butterflies around them. The title says "THE MASTER" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

Ahhh this one is a personal favorite of mine, and the one I have played as a player the most. In fact the art for this playbook is my PC Loonin Voh. Star Wars stories are full of fringe characters who have their own unique ways of studying the Force different from the Jedi or the Sith.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Loreseeker You are a keeper of ancient secrets. There are texts, artifacts, and holocrons in danger of becoming lost which should be preserved. The Jedi may wield the Force, but you serve it in your own way. Who's your favorite Loreseeker in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a short alien in ceremonial garb holding a holocron. The title says "THE LORESEEKER" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

The Learner! What an important cornerstone playbook for this game. Called “the Knight” in the earliest drafts of this game and “the Padawan” after that before I settled on using Vader’s verbiage from that last fight between him and Obi-Wan.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Learner You still remember the days you spent staring up at the sky, dreaming of a bigger Galaxy outside of your backwater home planet. You are a Jedi now, but you still have much to learn. Who's your favorite Learner in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a young alien humanoid holding a lightsaber and looking with awe. The title says "THE LEARNER" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

The Imp was a fun one to work on. One of the second batch of playbooks. I felt like the game needed a ‘spy,’ but it didn’t feel ‘star warsy’ enough to do a playbook called the Spy or even the Infiltrator. However there are LOTS of examples of Imperials seeing the light and joining the good guys.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Imp You’ve put away your uniform, but they can see it in the way that you carry yourself. You have done many things in the name of what you thought was a just cause, and now it’s time to atone. Who's your favorite Imp in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a bearded person hiding a clip board beneath their coat. The title says "THE IMP" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

There are so many great Star Wars leaders. From Leia to Luthen to Saw Gererra. My goals with this playbook were to illustrate someone already in a leadership position that still has highs to rise to, as well as give them an underlying darkness that I think even the most honorable leaders have.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The General You have led many lives to die among the stars in battle. That is your burden to bear as a natural born leader and a cunning strategist. You have a small trusted squadron of allies who will follow you to the brink Who's your favorite General in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a tactician standing over a holographic battle map. The title says "THE GENERAL" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

I had a lot of fun with this one. The Pararomantic from Monster of the Week has so many great ideas that just don’t get used that often because people turn their nose up at the romantic subtext. Big obvious shout out to that playbook that gave me so much to use here.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Dyad A few times every thousand years, the Force connects two souls. Your fate is tied to another whether you like it or not. Whether this connection helps you save the Galaxy or drags you down to the Dark Side is up to you. Who's your favorite Dyad in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a jedi holding their lightsaber with a shadowed humanoid shape behind them. The title says "THE DYAD" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

THE DROID. I have yet to play a Light Side session that doesn’t have someone trying to call dibs on the Droid. I’m proud of this one in part because a large complaint with other Star Wars ttrpgs is that playing a droid is prohibitively complex.

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Droid Often played for laughs, you fly under the radar. No one ever expects the unassuming mechanical companion to save the Galaxy, even though you play an integral part in the heroics time and time again. Who is your favorite Droid in #StarWars?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of a strange droid with a singular eye and tank tracks for legs. The title says "THE DROID" and the page details the various tracks and stats associated with playing Light Side.

As Cap makes these posts I’m gonna talk about some of my inspirations and design ideas for each playbook. This one came so easily to us because we started writing Light Side in the wake of the first two seasons of Mandalorian. The biggest challenge was making it not too Mando-coded….

Light Side@lightsiderpg.bsky.social · 3mo ago

#LIGHTSIDE PLAYBOOK SHOWCASE: The Bounty Hunter You are a solitary fortune seeker who serves their own code, unrivaled in your versatility in both skills and equipment. You get bounties to capture or kill, which might lead your crew into danger. Who is your favorite bounty hunter in the universe?

A grey playbook sheet with a sketch picture of an alien bounty hunter pointing their blaster up towards the top left. The title says "BOUNTY HUNTER" and the page details the various tracks associated with playing Light Side.

Have you been thinking about running a Star Wars one shot on your Actual Play? Now that @lightsiderpg.bsky.social is complete, I would love to guest on some AP shows who are interested in trying it. Willing to GM or play. I’m cool with it being main feed or bonus content for your patreon.

If you like Star Wars, you'll love this game. It's got all the hope and adventure of playing around in the SW universe. @maudlingames.com @ @itscap.bsky.social absolutely crushed it.
