I finally enjoyed a solid, deep sleep last night. Which is both good and bad. Whenever I sleep deeply, my dreams eventually turn into nightmares, and that finally wakes me up. Last night's dream ended in me being attacked by a bear. Which bodes well for my impending Alaska bear trip, I suppose.
A mother and daughter have just reunited in the golden light of Africa, and I have one question: Why would you leave?!

I'll probably look back at my recent South Africa trip as one of my least-productive Africa adventures behind the lens, but of course it was significant and fun because it provided the first true African safari experience for my son and our friends. Plus, I always enjoy learning more about...
We've made it home from Africa. Sleep lasted until about 5am, which isn't bad (the second day back is usually the worst for me, so I don't have high hopes for tomorrow morning). The rest of the family—expert sleepers—are still in dreamland.
We’ve wrapped our African adventure. The trip ended with a few fantastic days on the coast of Mozambique, as the first visitors to Zimanga’s new lodge. We enjoyed spectacular scenery, lots of whale and dolphin action, snorkeling, and the kids even got to try fishing for the first time.
This photo was taken in South Africa a couple mornings ago, but it sums up our relaxed experience so far here in Mozambique. No complaints!
Inevitably, just about every herd of elephants we encountered here in South Africa had groupies. In this case, it was a Burchell’s Starling that followed closely, waiting to see what bugs were stirred up in the giants’ wake.
Not surprising, but we’ve enjoyed some nice leopard luck both in Kruger NP and now at MalaMala Game Reserve. MalaMala is the best location for leopard viewing I’ve ever visited, by far.
Our South Africa adventure continues in the Greater Kruger. Our friends flew in today, and in order to keep them awake, we opted for a short PM game drive. It was their first African experience, and we saw a ton in only two hours (including a couple of spotted hyena families). Not a bad start!
Hi from South Africa, where we kicked off my friends-and-family trip in the northern Cape. We’ve had nice luck finding some nocturnal rarities, and I improved my springhare photo collection in an instant with this close encounter last night.

Continuing with my 2027 calendar preview, this is the second edition of the Wild Cats calendar. It's been ten years since my last version, and I was happy to be able to include more Asian species this time around!

You've likely seen the bison/tourist vid by now. To a park veteran and Yellowstone guide, it's clear the man in the video abided by park rules and was the unlucky target of a horny and agitated bull. The person in this photo, OTOH, did NOT abide by park rules, but somehow escaped unscathed. Sigh.

We really hoped that this giant anteater would do something rare and try to climb this tree in Guyana earlier this year... but sadly it remained earthbound and eventually moved on.
