Thanks to the many community members and organizations who threw a great National Night Out in Rainier Beach and South Park last night! Chief Sayles and I are grateful for the work that community does every day to keep each other safe.

This has been an especially tough week for Seattle. Gun violence can be prevented. The City of Seattle is partnering with state, federal, and local government partners to launch a gun violence reduction strategy that will build on programs, services, and law enforcement efforts already underway.

What happened at the Seattle Center today was an act of horrific violence. Impacted families are living through the worst moment of their lives, and an entire community is trying to understand how a gathering built around culture, connection, and joy ended in gunfire. No one should have to weigh the risk of being shot before attending an event, gathering with friends, or experiencing their city. In the days ahead, we will establish what happened and be transparent with the public about what we have learned. Seattle grieves with you, and we will stand with you in the difficult days ahead.

Statement on Funding Universal School Meals Starting this Fall

"Seattle has spoken overwhelmingly in support of universal school meals. Let's give a ton of credit to the teachers, parents and students who mobilized for free breakfast and lunch for every student. This is a priority of my office and we did the work to find a fiscally responsible path to fund universal school meals within the FEPP levy, which didn't require cutting services or eliminating jobs. Yesterday, the Council voted 6-3 to walk away from it.

Now Council is proposing to pull this funding from our general fund, which is already facing a $175 million deficit. I look forward to seeing which critical services they plan to cut from the general fund to make their numbers work. I ask them to reconsider the fiscally responsible approach my office originally put forward. Feeding every student in Seattle is a goal we share, and my office is eager to work with the Council to find the best path forward."

It’s a package that respects people’s hard-earned dollars and brings 100,000 more bus trips to Seattle every year and funds 22,000 free transit passes for low-income households.

Next week, we will gather in City Hall so I can sign the bill and send it to voters for their consideration this November. To everyone who showed up and helped shape the Seattle Transit Measure – I also say thank you, and congratulations.”
