I think to reduce Caine down to “he’s just like AM now” is a bit too simple; I view him less as a villain and a monster, and more as a neglected child having a tantrum. His breakdown, while certainly malicious, was driven by anguish and confusion at the world rather than solely anger or hate.
“In this world, the worst thing you can do is make someone feel like they’re not wanted or loved.” Caine was trying for so long to make everyone feel loved, but never could due to his insecurities, ego, and misunderstandings, ironically making it “the worst thing”. And so he got no love in return.
