Make Big Polluters Pay

@mbbp-aus.bsky.social

A growing coalition of organisations across Australia and the Pacific demanding that coal, oil and gas corporations pay their fair share for climate damage—not communities.🌏✊ Join us: https://www.makebigpolluterspay.org.au/

While tens of thousands of people across the world were losing their homes, livelihoods and loved ones to climate-fueled disasters and war, oil giants were raking in more than $700,000 every. single. minute. This is absolutely indefensible. Big polluters must be made to pay.

Heatwaves, drought and fires are making farming “virtually impossible” in parts of the world, and driving up food prices. While coal, oil and gas giants are making billions, communities are suffering the economic impact. This isn't fair. Big polluters should pay for climate damage—not us.

While the Australian public is bearing $38 billion/year costs to our economy, fossil fuel corporations are paying little to no tax on their $436 billion profits. 🤯 The unfairness is staggering. Polluters should be paying for the climate destruction they cause—not the rest of us.

Infographic reading: Climate disasters cost the Australian economy $38 billion per year. That's $3800 per household. By 2060, these costs will rise to at least $73 billion per year. In 2023-2024, one in three coal, oil and gas corporations paid no corporate income tax. Overall, the fossil fuel industry paid just 5% of its $436 billion reported income in corporate income tax.
