At drop-in this week, we learned that we lost another community member to overdose over the weekend. He had been coming to drop-in for years (at least a decade), and I always enjoyed yapping with him every week. This never gets any easier.

In 2023 while in NOLA, a Lyft Driver and I had a conversation about leaving home. It led to him telling me about his terminal diagnosis. “An editor told me once that if you want to understand a war, interview the grave diggers. I’d add that if you want to understand a city, interview the drivers.”

Today is one of those days in which I want to pack up my cats and Irish Exit for a few months. Sort of like the song "The Way" by Fastball, expect the three of us live and come back in the end all refreshed and ready to take on the bullshit again (well, my cats have easy lives, but you know).
It is very important to live a life in which you have friends who are just excited as you are about the fact that the Beastie Boys popularized the term "mullet" (for the hairstyle) with their 1994 song "Mullet Head."
Happy Musicophilia Friday! Let's relive the days of yore, when the soundtrack was recognized for the art form that it is. Tune into @wtul.bsky.social from 10PM-12M CST as I play some of my favorite songs featured in movies (and TV shows). 🖤
I'm heartbroken to share that Marvin (known to readers of There Is No Place for Us as Maurice) died earlier today in a workplace accident. He was 43. Natasha (Natalia in the book) asked me to share this news because she is too devastated to do so herself. We are all in shock.
"We don’t have to roll over for machines used by capital interests, or let them feast on our bones until we are gone. To say it’s inevitable is begging to be replaced and forgotten." @nikostratis.com is always good, but this essay is particularly rousing.

The article is clear that people who didn’t eat at Taco Bell also got sick, so it’s not a unique product only they carry. I’d be wary of any prepared chopped iceberg lettuce, from anywhere, on anything, until they get a more precise track on the supply chain. Salads, sandwiches, just avoid.

This article I wrote for @antigravitymag.bsky.social last October remains evergreen. As so many of us warned, there would be major consequences for dismantling public health systems, and the cyclosporiasis outbreak is just one of many. antigravitymagazine.com/feature/defe...

The University of Washington has some very detailed reports they have made about WHY this is happening. They are using Washington States DOL data. It’s illegal in WA, but the system is accessed via law enforcement and the Feds keep using it anyway. They are most likely doing this EVERYWHERE. 🧵
"Unlike previous, more visible surges in Portland, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Minneapolis, the Dept of Homeland Security has changed its tactics, focusing on rapid, dispersed seizures, often on major roads and highways."

Is it too much to ask for two of those handsome football boys to declare their love for each other and properly smooch after one of the World Cup games? Maybe with Wolf Parade playing in the background?

Persephone (my kitten) has taken to monitoring me when I clean out the litterboxes and scoops out litter with her paws alongside me. It is kind of gross and not super helpful (she gets litter everywhere), and it is also one of the cutest things I have ever experienced.

As a reminder, the ideology they are referring to is anti-fascism.
Judge O’Connor stated from the bench that he is giving maximum sentences to the Prairieland sentences because “the state wants to send a message to anyone who shares a similar ideology.”
