Dear all scientists and everyone who cares about #NIH and medical cures: This is very important! Please read the thread and blog post. The Supreme Court looks very likely to blow up NIH grants and create chaos. Decision could come any time. 🧪

The Supreme Court is reviewing a vitally important NIH case on its shadow docket. It is likely that the Court will back Trump, and say his (illegal) grant terminations are ok. We must speak up now. 1/

Noise is the second leading environmental cause of disease and death in Europe, second only to air pollution. It’s time for other regions, especially the U.S., to recognize that noise isn't merely a nuisance but a serious public health issue. The first step is accurately measuring noise.

It is unbelievable that The Atlantic would publish this anti-science garbage. The author is one of the COVID deniers who pushed “herd immunity” — that is, “kill lots of people so things can go back to “normal.” This is a rightwing political stance. Why would the Atlantic publish him?

Kristian G. Andersen@kgandersen.bsky.social · last yr.

One of the most bonkers articles I have ever read @theatlantic.com - outright disinformation and revisionist history top to bottom. Myth making at its best, so deeply irresponsible of @theatlantic.com to publish this. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

How often do you think of #noise as a serious pollutant? 🔊 If you are in Brussels on 24 June, we encourage you to attend the event: "Noise: the overlooked pollutant – Impacts and solutions for a healthier Europe." ✍️ Spots are limited, so take the opportunity and register 👇

Since Lincoln was President, the National Academies has provided unbiased expert guidance to the government. I’ve had the privilege of serving on multiple committees, and the excellent staff takes their responsibility to help the country very seriously. What are we doing here?

I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.

“The ecosystem of research and the creation of new knowledge in universities has been so powerful for American prosperity, American freedom, American ingenuity. To have that disrupted by government overreach is a disaster for this country.” —Wesleyan University President Michael Roth on @msnbc.com

"The Trump administration has terminated $800 million in grants to Johns Hopkins University, spurring the nation’s top spender on research and development to plan layoffs and cancel health projects, from breast-feeding support efforts in Baltimore to mosquito-net programs in Mozambique."

Johns Hopkins Plans Staff Layoffs After $800 Million Grant Cuts

Local and international health research efforts are already winding down as the university braces for even more potential cuts.

We are getting a LOT of messages asking "why say the Democratic Senators need to be pressured, aren't they doing everything they can?" No, they are not. Not close. Democrats in the Senate are going along with what Republican Senators want, because they want to be buddy-buddy with those R's. 1/2

Today would be yet another good day for university presidents to loudly, collectively, & publicly start defending our institutions & industry. The silence is deafening & frankly, incomprehensible. What exactly are you waiting for? How many Columbias, Maines, & Johns Hopkins will it take?

Mark Copelovitch@mcopelov.bsky.social · 2y ago

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

One workaround for including "censored" words in scientific writing is to spell them backwards - no need to change sentence structure while tripping up the bots/goons. For example, we investigate health effects of "etamilc egnahc" in the context of "latnemnorivne ecitsuj," particularly in "nemow".

Imagine the thundering voice we could have if we each gave a fraction of our time to action instead of sharing clickbait in echo chambers. Democracy isn’t someone else’s job to protect—it’s everyone’s responsibility. "1% for all. Give 1% of your time—reclaim what the 1% is taking." #onepercentforall
