The Sewerage and Water Board claims transparency. In practice they are very interested in keeping public information from the public. Since the beginning of the year I have tried to obtain information from their data systems, as I have over a dozen times since 2020. Now they refuse. (1/x)
It is over 96 hours out from the National Weather Service warnings which started a legislatively mandated 48 hour clock for SWBNO to report the status and performance of pumps, power, and staffing of the drainage system to the CityCouncil @nolautilities.bsky.social. No report on the Council website.
The finger pointing was always going to come. The far, far greater outrage is SWBNO saying they are going to chuck the Entergy substation during storms, after the city put tens of millions of its own dollars into it. (1/x)
NOLA.com@nolanews.bsky.social · 2mo agoThe S&WB said a voltage drop from a new Entergy substation caused its equipment to trip offline for more than half an hour, cutting power to seven major drainage pump stations.
It has now been over two days since the SWBNO $350 million West Power Complex failed in its first big test, and the agency has yet to reveal any details about a possible cause, the extent of the failure through the water and drainage systems, or if there is any solution.
Whether or not SWBNO knows the exact cause for the apparent massive failure of their brand new multi-million dollar, publicly funded power complex this morning, they do know exactly what the consequences were and have yet to say. (1/x)
As usual, SWBNO communications is making things more confusing. According to their spokesperson (thru the T-P) the 25 Hz outage this morning knocked seven entire stations offline. That's impossible. (1/x)
Something major happened with the brand new SWBNO power system, knocking out drainage and water pumps for 30 minutes, according to a press release. No word yet on a boil water advisory.

Major news from @SWBNewOrleans Turbine 4 is permanently out of service. All three new frequency converters at the new power complex have been placed in service after contractually required testing. The S&WB is now officially off of steam for generation of 25 cycle power. (1/2)
If anyone's interested, the maximum for contract action approval by the Executive Director without Board say-so at Sewerage and Water Board is $1,000,000. The agency staff is supposed to provide a monthly listing of the sub-$1 mil contracts to the Board, but do not bother any more.

It's still happening. This is a Google News search - sorted by date - which is now garbage, including Polymarket. They have allowed slop and trash into Google News results if you sort by date. It's the same move they made with YouTube.

Like they did with YouTube, Google has now removed sorting News results by date. They say "when you refine a search, google may include search results other than new content," which translates to a garbage heap of Facebook and Twitter posts. This was one of the few reasons I had for Google searches.
There is absolutely no reason for Sewerage and Water Board to be adding areas like this so long after a break. They have tons of water pressure data at the moment the break happened from their new smart meter system. Whether they know how to extract that data in timely fashion ...

The passage below is a quote from the S&WB press release for today's South Claiborne water main break. What is strange is that S&WB appears to have gotten the size of the main wrong. Drawings for the project that replaced a portion of the same main 100 feet downstream show it is a 48" main, not 30".

City Council Utilities Committee@nolautilities.bsky.social · 5mo agoWater pressures in this area fell below 20 pounds per square inch (psi) due to a break on the 30-in water main near S Claiborne Ave and Toledano St. Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans crews are en route and working to isolate the break.
The break appears to be just upstream of Louisiana Ave. The S&WB installed a new 48" water main from the downstream side of Louisiana down to 3rd St, so this break appears to be outside the scope of the $12 million project (which went six months long and incurred $800,000 in change orders).

Likely far more impactful would be a possible conversion of the seven-block long warehouse on Tchoup betw Louisiana and General Taylor from cargo handling to mixed retail. Unclear if their latest tenant would stay. That tenant? U.S. Customs and Border Protection, who moved in last year.
