Google's own example in their announcement is having it recreate a "hyper-realistic" view of Pompeii before the eruption. The AI reconstruction in their own advertisement leaves most of the ruined walls ruined, just with more vivid colors. It adds some more ruined edifices, too.

the lines were clunky and on the nose, but I thought explicitly invoking the bronze age collapse was actually pretty smart. The original is an iron age work looking back at the bronze age as a remote age of heroes, which is lost on modern audiences if you don't do *something*

I'm extremely thankful for the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act for helping to put a leash on these crazed companies, but I didn't consider that they might respond by circumventing the law in the most psychologically damaging way possible for a small child

Can anybody spot the issue with having a lifelike, deliberately approachable anthropomorphic robot that students can confide in but that is not a mandatory reporter and has no way of contacting authorities if needed

As with many other destructive long-term investments, this would become (even more) uneconomical and difficult to finance if Democrats made it very clear that they will kill it stone dead when they're back in power. Companies have to start to feel the regulatory instability they've asked for.

"some poor overworked reporter" this is a tic that people need to get rid of. Stop absolving individuals of responsibility for their own actions just because they're embedded in institutions. If you want to reestablish norms, people have to be ostracized, as individuals, for violating them.
the rest of the world isn't going to pay enough attention to the constantly changing battle lines between ostensible privacy protections built into smart glasses and their customers' attempts to circumvent them. We'll just see someone wearing them and assume they're that type of customer.

a lot of Americans always respond to stuff like this with jokes about specialty foods. In the American imagination, only Germany and the Nordics are industrialized, and the rest of Europe just sends us cheese and wine. But Spain's top exports to us are things like gas turbines and pharmaceuticals.

I found a plaque given to my grandfather by the USPS for offering a "beneficial suggestion." There's also a picture of him proudly accepting it. He didn't work for the Post Office or anything.
