Cars – Corby | Mapping American Childhoods

Yesterday I was reading an academic book and learned that more than 500 children died in automobile accidents in New York City in 1914 alone, most after being struck by cars. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I tried to verify the number and found this poster from 1917.
Of course it is -- this applies to EVERYTHING. A man could swing a wet noodle at a housefly and be seen as innovative while a woman would be seen as ridiculous, dumb, Incompetent. 🙄
Women’s use of AI is perceived as a sign of incompetence, while men’s use of AI is seen as an indication of initiative. 🤦🏻♂️

What did YOU do in ~2007 to cause birth rates to crash? Wrong answers only. I moved my family from Buffalo to Vermont in late 2006 -- clearly a major contributor, well beyond the bursting housing bubble and resulting economic crash. 🙄 www.npr.org/2026/06/12/n...
Can smartphones help explain the drop in birth rates?
Are smartphones causing people to have fewer children? A provocative new working paper explores the persistent drop in birth rates since the iPhone was introduced nearly two decades ago.

Sending this to everyone I know. Best piece I've read on the challenges of AI and I've always appreciated the work of T.H. Marshall, so it's great to see such an apt application of his framework.
AI companies are writing their own constitutions. Meanwhile, a shared vocabulary for contesting algorithmic power has been traveling across red and blue states, from legislatures to civil society. New from me in @science.org: "A Civic Grammar for AI Rights" www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... 🧵

“When you’re unable to drive, the flaws in our public transit system become obvious. Sidewalks that end suddenly, street crossings that feel like a sprint for your life, and bus routes perfectly timed to miss the train. When transit is your only option, these things aren’t minor inconveniences.”
