"In CHUNGKING EXPRESS, everything is important—every can of pineapple, every dripping towel, every loop of “California Dreamin’”—mimicking that all-encompassing feeling of infatuation. These small items hold an entire story, the heartbreak and the hope and the waiting."

Love You for 10,000 Years | Chungking Express - Bright Wall/Dark Room

This, more than anything, informs the ethos of Chungking Express: loneliness and the hope that, maybe, someday, it won’t be quite as potent as it is now.

I can guarantee few or none of the people bitching and moaning about the Gerwig adaptation news have read The Magician's Nephew as many times as I have (and it's my least favourite of the seven!) so I'mma need the whiners to either step to, or take a fucking seat

I usually buy one pair running shoes a year, keeping 2-4 pairs in rotation (light runs, long runs, trail runs) bc of injuries, I haven't worn through any shoes far enough to get a new pair for a couple years . . . UNTIL NOW!

This week's shots are all DIsToRTEd, starting with this shot from Roger Corman's The Masque of The Red Death. as Prince Prospero (Vincent Price) walks, the room itself seems to warp, as the camera movement keeps him central while the lens distorts the people and objects around him.

It's been ages since I've last seen it, but Nine to Five still has the juice. The Disney-princesses-fantasy sequence is great, and I laughed so hard during the body snatching sequence I nearly cried. One of a kind, Dolly was.

We [Mel, with a shameless plug] used several whip pans in @PhiandMeTV, a combination of stylistic choice, approximating Phi’s POV, and shooting constraints. We kept consistent visual language for Uncle Ray’s non-sequiturs, and similar techniques (eg crash zooms) for Phi's other POV shots.

It is silly and outdated to mock female athletes; they are skilled, work hard in an unfair system, and deserve equal pay." *five minutes later* "Fully half of women who show for open soccer [football] tryouts can't jog 50 yards [metres] without a lie down" christ on a cracker

In Girl 6, Spike Lee uses a distinct shift in look (colour, angle / blocking, film grain) and feel (different wardrobe, different set dressing, Theresa Randle as Judy leaning into the Blaxploitation vibes) to signal this shift into a film Judy stars in . . . if only in her head.

this series on 'shots of time in The Bear' has been one of my other favourite, hyper-specific, only-slightly-obsessive studies the last few years so here they are: the final shots of how this series depicted time, and how every second of it counts

All things must come to an end, and that includes our series looking at every shot of time-keeping mechanisms in The Bear. shotzero.substack.com/p/the-bear-a...
