Sleepless last couple of nights because of this heartbreaking, tender, impeccably reported new book by @praddenkeefe.bsky.social LONDON FALLING is fascinating and utterly gobsmacking -- and that's just the footnotes. Best not read before bed!

Why does everything feel so joyless? Welcome to the age of decadence without pleasure | Michèle Mendelssohn and Charlie Tyson
Decadence in our era comes in technologically mediated forms, emptied of desire and obsessed with self-optimisation

Congratulations to Professor Michèle Mendelssohn (@mendelight.bsky.social), Mansfield Fellow and Professor of English and American Literature (@engfac.bsky.social), on her election as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS)! 🎉 www.mansfield.ox.ac.uk/news-events/...
As someone who studies literature written by humans, I'm fascinated by the literary and rhetorical forms underpinning human-free tech, e.g. questions @carissaveliz.bsky.social discusses in her terrific new book, PROPHECY: PREDICTION, POWER, AND THE FIGHT FOR THE FUTURE, FROM ANCIENT ORACLES TO AI
Finally! An imaginative, fun, relevant take on Wilde's AN IDEAL HUSBAND set in the present day performed by a glorious cast @lyrichammersmith.bsky.social This is the production I've been waiting for. Bravo!
If you will be in London in May, please consider attending the Ronald Firbank Centenary Symposium. Alan Hollinghurst will be delivering the keynote!

I’ve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight www.cityam.com/the-british-...
This is the importance of buying the books we write and teach from university presses. The same administrations that don’t care about the humanities would be just as happy to have academic publishing handled by these companies. We can save our own publishing ecosystem- but we have to do it.
"academic publishing is dominated by profit-oriented, multinational companies for whom scientific knowledge is a commodity to be sold back to the academic community who created it... The dominant four collectively generated... $12 billion in profits between 2019 and 2024."
