'Mortal' by Atul Gawande is an eye-opening read. I've never been too fond of the way our culture prioritizes how long we live over the quality of our life, especially when we're looking at the end. And if you're disabled, you're treated as if you've no right to either.

No one should be coerced into Assisted Death in lieu of being provided adequate supports to thrive. Yet this is happening to disabled people in Canada. People who need housing. Home care. Specialized medical care. We must commit to providing the right to live if we’re offering the right to die
What angers me most is that people who WANT and are actively seeking to use MAiD... Get the runaround. They get denied. They're never "bad enough." But someone who DOESN'T need or want it? Magically all the hoops and red tape vanish?
I will be following the inquest closely & hopefully writing an article about it. I support the right to die, but we need to have some very tough conversations about how to protect disabled and marginalized people from neglect, coercion & abuse. We’re failing at that right now. Let’s change things
I'm trying to get myself feeling well enough to go out... ... to work on training the service horse I need because I feel unwell. 🙃
This, so much. I've given up the guilt over being an "armchair activist" because I only have so much energy. I only have so much mental + emotional bandwidth. Using most of it to prioritize my day-to-day survival is not a moral failing when the current regime's goal is for me NOT to survive.
Resistance looks different for many disabled people. We may be unable to protest, boycott or do other activities our non disabled peers take for granted. That doesn’t mean we aren’t fighting back. Survival is resistance. Rest is resistance. Accommodate us & we will bring expertise to the cause
normalize shaming people for nonconsensually posting videos of strangers online. the stranger being recorded isn't the cringe weirdo, it's the fucking goon who's so incapable of separating the internet from reality they think it's acceptable to treat strangers like content generating npcs.
And now, update on my mobility horse: We're starting ground driving training soon! Still only doing short sessions because he's still young but I'm proud of how quickly he catches on. Just a matter of finding the equipment in "extra tiny" size now!
This is why I take my spouse with me to nearly every appointment, regardless of what it is. Simply having him *in the room* even if he doesn't say a word changes how I'm treated. /🧵
I’ve just put my first article on Medium, a look at medical misogyny and how it impacts women’s health. Now more than ever it’s critical to have an advocate with you in healthcare settings. I didn’t know it at the time, but my unintentional advocate saved my life:
This is exactly what I was afraid of... And now that the plan is to deport "homegrown" folks, you KNOW what happens. If you're disabled, no matter how minor, be worried.
When you vilify disabled people and let ableism run rampant… this is what happens. Disabled individuals are not safe in the US. There should be significant public outcry over this… but too many people believe we’re expendable.
Alright, angry hours are over. I'm glad I'll see this little shaggy beastie tomorrow. We're just about to begin "big boy training" now that he's reached two years old. He's looking 🥴 here because this was the day he was sedated for his first float (horse dentist). He's fine! Just veeeerry sleepy!
He's already thrown several Canadian, one UK citizen, and one German into ICE detention centers/prisons for VERY minor things. Once someone it detained it's purposely near-impossible to get them out regardless of who they are or why they were detained. Do. Not. Come. Here. NOBODY is 'safe.'
If Trump is preparing to deport US citizens to private prisons in other countries, imagine what his regime will do to tourists. It’s not safe to travel to the U.S. Cancel your plans. Go somewhere else. Don’t spend money there, don’t support fascism and don’t take the risk.
He's absolutely going to find a way to ship off political dissenters. The timing is too convenient. Don't think he wouldn't repeat the Boston Massacre either. He's already said as much about protesters.
It literally could not possibly be more clear. They. Are. Going. To. Send. Citizens. To. The. Camps.
My spouse told me about this. There is absolutely NO WAY a man who is (allegedly) 6'3" and weighs (allegedly) 40 lbs less than me looks like THAT unless he's a gd pro athlete or a body builder/weightlifter, with the other vitals of a 30 yo. Oh & JDV? I know some men who'd LOVE his growth secret.

Every time some shitweasel says something akin to "wow, such tolerance from the left" this is my same reply. There is no amount of racism, fascism, transphobia, or other such attitudes that is "tolerable."
I wonder how the Supreme Court feels about granting Donald Trump immunity for official acts now that one of those official acts is telling the Supreme Court to shove their ruling and fuck the fuck off.
Apparently today is "give mom a heart attack" day. I opened the door to 'our' room (temporary sleeping arrangement) and... no cat. *rustle rustle behind me* "Mrow?"
Louder. For the people who STILL don't know that businesses are exploiting us, preying on us as "cheap labor," and exploiting us literally to our deaths.
Disabled people deserve living wage. Disabled people deserve living wage. Disabled people DESERVE living wage. A Disabled person deserved a living wage just as much as a non-disabled person. 💯❤️💯❤️🙌🏻 #Disability #homeless #ChronicPain #SocialSecurity #BlueCrew #StrongerTogether #SSA
Proud of my state (for once)! This is why our legislature is SCARED right now, because decades of unquestioned conservative Republican control are weakening.
The crowd and overflow crowd for the Bernie Sanders/AOC event tonight in Utah. Wow.
I won't (miss it) because I'll never be able to retire, I've been denied disability, and yada yada. But my dad? Who relies 100% on his because he's retired? Yeah. I'm SURE the utility companies take IOUs...
"You're not going to miss your retirement money, folks!!! It was just numbers!!! Not nearly as important as saying the lie 'America First'!!! Now, that's REAL! Kinda . . . " God, these people are idiots.
I spotted a Swastitruck in the wild! The thin veneer of SLC pollution is a nice touch rofl
For some reason in our culture we treat people with certain diseases better than others. Sometimes it's because people know someone who has something similar, who isn't in that bad of shape maybe? The problem with that is every illness exists on a spectrum. Everyone is unique. #Disability
Want more proof the Republicans are literal Nazi's? Notice their obsession with "work" and how people who don't are viewed as morally bad. That's intentional. The sign in front of the Death Camps during the Holocaust translates to "Work sets you Free" #Fascism en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbeit_...
This isn’t the first time New York has tried to ban masks. Both Hochul and Mayor Adams have previously said they want to ban masks, with Adams using Luigi Mangione as an excuse to push for them a few months ago. Mask bans don’t stop crime. They just stop people from safely accessing public spaces:
NYC Mayor Wants to Ban Masks in the Wake of Shooting Death of CEO Brian Thompson
A look at how the shooting death of Brian Thompson is being used to re-ignite interest in banning masks in New York City - a move which would be a devastating blow to the disabled community.

Something I've also found (and friends have confirmed) is that because we're in pain daily, we don't respond the same way. When you live with a 3-5 pain and learn to function around it, you don't react the same to 6-10 that someone else does. /🧵
The Pain Scale is a Pain, but Doctors Ignore Alternatives — Pain News Network
By Crystal Lindell When I first started having debilitating rib pain more than 10 years ago, doctors would constantly ask me to rate my pain on a scale of 1-10. It was the worst pain I had eve...

Remember that the ADA wasn't established by disabled people begging for our rights. They PROTESTED. These people are heroes who established a legacy for people like me born after the ADA.
