🌨️ Here's an anatomy of the snow flurries which caused such excitement in Wellington yesterday 📉 The high for the day was 8.9°C at 1am. The strengthening southerly pushed temperatures down through the morning, until the sun started to get a bit of strength and start increasing the temperature.

🐧 While the local penguins are hunkering down, our cold Antarctic visitor will hang around 🐧 🧊 The polar air that has blanketed the country isn't going anywhere fast. Expect widespread severe frosts and possible black ice. ❄️ Even Northland could see frost, with Whangarei forecast to reach 0°C.

🐧 The penguins have arrived! 🐧 🌨️ The polar blast bringing sea level snow has been swept right off the Antarctic ice shelf, 48 hours ago the air over the country was hanging out with Penguins! 🧊 Temperatures will plunge tonight, with severe frosts in many places. Beware of icy roads and drive safe.

Antarctic visitor incoming ❄️ While it's not literal penguins visiting us from the Antarctic ice edge, it does demark the trajectory of some air heading our way. This very cold air brings the potential for snow to around sea level for parts of Southland, Otago and Canterbury Tuesday morning.

🌨️ Windy for Christchurch, and lots of snow on the road 🍃 🍃 Alongside our existing watches for strong winds for parts of the South Island and Wellington, a new Yellow Strong Wind Watch has been issued for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula during Friday evening.

🍃 Strong winds and frigid air mean bitterly cold southerlies are on the cards 🧊 🥶 Strong Wind Watches for the lower South Island coinciding with cold air will result in very low wind chill values, possibly as low as -2°C for Invercargill on Friday afternoon.

🌦️ After a few very cold nights, the frost is out and rain is in ❄️ 📈 Temperatures are much warmer this morning, with frosts quite a bit harder to find. They still lurk in a few places, with most of the coldest places in the country in the North Island where skies are a bit clearer.

🍃 Severe weather update, its getting blustery 🌧️ 🍃 Yellow Strong Wind Watches have been issued for Wellington, the Canterbury High Country, and coastal parts of Otago and Southland. Note the wind direction, with northwesterlies for Wellington and Canterbury, but southerlies in the south.

🥶 It's another cold one Aotearoa, but temperatures are on their way up 📈 While most places aren't quite as cold as the past two days, its still very frosty around the motu. The warmest places were actually in the far south, as warmer air begins to push onto the country.

❄️ Feeling the winter blues with these shorter days and colder mornings? Spare a thought for those based at Scott Base in Antarctica, who haven’t seen the sun since late April! Their next sunrise is expected around the 19th of August, ending their dark winter spell.

A severe thunderstorm formed over the western suburbs of Wellington this morning before moving east-northeast. The storm brought hail, torrential rain, and very poor visibility. We hope everyone is safe. We are continuing to monitor the situation closely 🏠
