One thing I like about Canada 🇨🇦: the locals love A&W! As a kid I was always begging mom to get me a Root Beer Float, but now these fast food joints are vanishing in the U.S. I’m glad to see our fine Canadian neighbors still appreciate the great value of Root Beer & ice cream 🍨- a delicacy, I say!

Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (out today, 1967) is one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums, filled with Syd Barret’s playful psychedelic rock and devoid of Roger Water’s lumbering “message” tracks. A fab debut, tracks like the trippy “Astronomy Domine” and the catchy “Bike” leaving me wanting more Syd.

#filmsky Today in 1984 we lost Richard Burton. A great example of “How come he never won an Oscar,” Dickie should definitely have won for his George in Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf, and he shoulda beaten Dreyfus in 1977 for his towering role as the disturbed shrink in Equus. The Welsh lad ruled!

#filmsky It’s hard to fathom that the dude who opened his Un Chien Andalou with a chick getting her eye slit open also made Robinson Crusoe (out today, 1954), but Luis Bunuel made a terrific boys adventure of the DeFoe classic. Anchored by Dan O’Herlihy’s Oscar-nominated lead, it’s a Bunuel classic

#filmsky While I’m partial to films about talking cats, I’ll admit that pigs 🐷have a certain je ne sais quoi too. Chris Noonan’s Babe (out today, 1995) surprised some by getting a BP nomination, but this tale of a piglet that becomes a sheepdog sure is a charmer. I like the darker sequel even better

#filmsky Vampires or witches? Dan Curtis had a hit with House Of Dark Shadows and the return of Barnabas Collins, but the sequel Night Of Dark Shadows (out today, 1961) flopped. It’s too bad; it gave us witch Angelique (the fab Lara Parker) haunting Collinwood, plus Kate Jackson! Moody and creepy!

Just watched: Excalibur. John Boorman’s sweeping medieval fantasy is an exciting, rousing film that looks better than ever; he puts you right into the Legend of King Arthur in all its glory, mixing epic visuals with brutal realism. Great work by Nigel Terry & Nicole Williamson; pull the sword!

One of the greatest DC Comics issues ever? When The Brave And The Bold paired Batman with The House Of Mystery (!) to figure out who was targeting a young Scottish boy. DC just reprinted this beauty but I have that glorious original. Great story; how they involve House Of Mystery is ingeniously fun.

A new start! Today in 1971, Paul McCartney officially formed his new band Wings. They got rousing acclaim for their Band On The Run LP but my personal faves were Wings At The Speed Of Sound and the high energy Wings Over America. Sure it was mostly Paul but they made FM radio hits irresistible.

Just watched: The Road To Guantanamo. Political docudrama about 3 UK Muslims who travel to Afghanistan after 911, get arrested by U.S. forces and face torture at Guantanamo. Grim drama but too one sided to be truly effective; it feels like a relic of the War on Terror days. We all hate Guantanamo.

It wouldn’t be Saturday night if I didn’t join my family at one of our local favorites, Pop Thai Restaurant, which we love for its authentic Thai food like my Drunken Noodles and Tofu Soup (yes, I know you think tofu is gross. I don’t!) Then it was back home to check on Beau. And hey, it’s August!

#filmsky Lots of ingredients make The Lost Boys (out today, 1987) a winner: the delicious mix of humor & vampire horror, the fab ensemble cast (Edward Herrmann rocks!) I especially love how the teen vampire hunters are mired in comic book culture; the film feels like a great vampire comic! Terrific!

#filmsky Alan Arkin got an Oscar nod as the deaf mute who relocates to a small southern town in The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter (out today, 1968), but the real surprise was the terrific debut by Sondra Locke, long before she was just known as Clint’s main squeeze. A fine film; Arkin & Locke rule.

#filmsky A hotel on the Florida Keys, a ruthless gangster and a hurricane? Sign me up for Key Largo (out today, 1948), John Huston’s rollicking thriller, as Bogie takes on gangster Edward G. Robinson as the storm rises. Claire Trevor won an Oscar as an alcoholic singer; nice mood of despair here.
