It is interesting to see certain cinemas tripping over themselves to hype up a 35mm re-release of a film, mere months after they lost their minds over a 4K re-release of the same film.

I've picked up a second hand 2DS and I am in love.
Delicate diplomatic situation round ours this morning as we try to talk the 7 year old into deleting their Animal Crossing save file so their mum can start afresh as the 'resident representative' and actually make progress building the island. Billing you for the therapy sessions, Nintendo.
There's a clip doing the rounds from Louis Theroux's podcast interview with Mike D, where he queries the Beastie Boys' line "I've got more stories than JD's got Salinger" and says: "JD Salinger only wrote 10 stories." He says this with such confidence, like a gotcha, but it's completely wrong?!
Sorry, I don't make the rules, but... If you're boasting about seeing The Odyssey for a second time, or posting about "finally" seeing it, before it has even been released, you're getting a pie to the face.
The gang at @sightsoundmag.bsky.social have posted my short piece on Paprika and the internet on their Instagram. www.instagram.com/p/DaktqHrCGy...
Not to bang the BFI drum but there's a good bunch of Tony Rayns works in the Mediatheque at BFI Southbank. Editions of VISIONS with specials on the cinema of Shanghai, Hong Kong + Vietnam, plus a Q&A with Bong Joon Ho circa MOTHER and a lecture on the films of Hou Hsiao-Hsien.
Tiktok timeline chock-full of influencer videos about the Odyssey premiere.

Grok has a *real* problem with Japanese names. Below are the second and third times in a month that I've spotted auto-translated posts that mix up two Japanese anime directors: Mamoru Hosoda and Makoto Shinkai in the first; Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Oshii in the second. How is this happening?

Incredible news just announced... @gkids.com have acquired the distribution rights for the Studio Ghibli library for UK and Ireland! And we're finally getting Kiki's Delivery Service in IMAX! Just the best news for all fans on these shores.
I'm in the new @sightsoundmag.bsky.social with a short piece on Satoshi Kon's prescient psycho-delic fantasia PAPRIKA, as part of a big feature on 21st Century Sci-Fi.
Arco has turned up on Prime. Sad to miss it in the cinema, but glad to be able to give it a watch now.

I've got so many stories to tell you about the history of manga, so many great creators and scholars for you to check out. You can join the livestream anywhere, or come along to Peckham next week. Everyone welcome, though famous locals (John Boyega, Susan Wokoma, many others!) are prob. too busy.
Only a week to go until I finally get to present the #HistoryofManga for #SeedTalks - should have happened on 3 March but I was otherwise engaged with the #NHS fixing my shoulder. If you can't get into London, it's livestreaming anywhere with internet. Tkts: tinyurl.com/2u9pcjfr
Just read an astonishing Grok error over on X, where the in-app translation changed "高畑勲" (Isao Takahata) to "Hayao Miyazaki" on a post about Anne of Green Gables. My fault for frequenting that site and relying on machine translation, but still... Now they're not even getting names right. Be alert!
Film interviews with Takahata subtitled into English are rare. Check out this wonderful addition to Ghibli scholarship!
I've just added what I believe is the only interview with Isao Takahata that ever went out on British TV to my animation research collection down at the BFI Mediatheque. Short, but significant.

The entire Ghibli UK rights situation since StudioCanal dropped them has been insanely and unreasonably screwy
Sad news, as this means that Studio Ghibli films will go back into rights limbo in the UK. But hopefully a new company will snap up the catalogue soon. deadline.com/2026/06/dann...
