Educated as a scientist and attorney, now just a well-informed spectator. Gay, environmentalist, atheist, liberal. I am an active home chef, read science fiction, science non-fiction, and history. Also a bird-watcher and amateur naturalist. In NYC

I made ground beef & potato burritos. I got the idea from a recipe that was imitating a Taco Bell item, but I changed it a lot. Beef, potatoes & aromatics are sautéed, sauced & cheese is added. The burritos are sautéed a bit to crisp them and topped with avocado-tomatillo salsa & crema 1/2 #foodsky

This was a recipe I’d been wanting to make for a while, chanclas poblanas. It’s a chorizo sandwich that’s covered with guajillo-tomato sauce. The recipe said to ladle the sauce on. I did that here but the next one I dredged the bread thought the sauce which worked better. Recipe below 1/2 #foodsky

I went to Lincoln Center last night for a sneak peak of the Japanese film ‘The Samurai and the Prisoner’. It was mix of a police procedural & a historical drama set in 15th century Japan with historical figures. I liked the intricate costumes & the main character’s questioning of tradition #moviesky

My latest read. It was an inventive novel that I’d categorize as fantasy influenced by hard science. A jelly, as biologists call them, exerts supernatural powers on a local community & the woman (a marine biologist) who comes to help them. Thanks NY Public Library for the loan #booksky #NYPL

Yesterday was a Summer Streets day in NYC in Queens. They close off a street to cars for a day. The street was Vernon close to the East River. There were some nice spots, like the Socrates Sculpture Park, but it’s mostly industrial. The 1st pic is new buildings in Queens 2nd is Manhattan.

I went to the art house movie theater Metrograph in NYC for the classic spaghetti western For a Few Dollars More. Metrograph referred to a classic scene: ‘a stern reminder to never, ever, under any circumstances, talk shit about Clint Eastwood’s mule. Best description for a scene ever. #cinema

I made spiced lamb meatballs with the herby pearl couscous. That’s what Americas Test Kitchen calls it. It’s a Mediterranean inspired recipe but as as far as I know it not a traditional one from that region. I flubbed the recipe a little by not measuring the salt carefully recipe below 🍽️🍜 #foodsky

I am still exploring Chinese cuisine, this is a copycat version of Xi’an Famous’ spicy cumin lamb noodles & originated in northwestern China. Woks of Life reverse engineered the recipe. It was a bit of work since a lot of ingredients needed to be chopped but worth it. Recipe below 1/2 🍜🍽️#foodsky

This is the second variation of hot dogs I made this weekend. The recipe called for hot dogs but I swapped them for merguez sausage. They are topped with pickled red onions & tzatziki. I would usually have a pickle on the side but a pickled red pepper seemed a better fit recipe below 1/2 🍽️🍜 #foodsky

Appropriately for the country’s 250th anniversary I went to the New York Public Library where they had Thomas Jefferson’s copy of the Declaration of Independence, I wasn’t able to get much of a look due to the long lines of people wanting to see it. Thanks #NYPL

The salad was a chicken & cabbage salad with a miso-sesame vinaigrette. The salad is mostly vegetables & the chicken is just one of several ingredients. It’s now garden salad than the salad you make sandwiches with. Also I can never remember how spell vinaigrette. Recipe below 1/2 🍽️🍜 #foodsky

It was 101 degrees in NYC today so I thought, hey let’s spend a few hours in a hot kitchen making steaming hot soup! This is shannxi saozi mian & it was totally worth it. It has four parts, meat sauce, soup base, noodles & omelette. Soy puffs were a new ingredient for me Recipe below 1/2 🍜🍽️ #foodsky

My latest read. It’s a sci-fi/fantasy short story collection. The stories raise philosophical questions about technology, belief & the capabilities of human beings but are still entertaining, something the author is known for. Thanks NY Public Library 💙📚 #booksky

Dinner was moo shu chicken, but without the pancakes. It had two new ingredients for me, dried wood-ear mushrooms & dried lily flowers. Eggs are cooked separately then mixed in. The pic does not have eggs because, even though I cooked them, I forgot to add them. 🤦‍♂️ lol. recipe below 1/2 🍜🍽️ #foodsky
